The Royal Lancaster Hospital (R.L.I.) is the major acute hospital for North Lancashire and South East Cumbria. All serious trauma is  transported direct to the R.L.I. from the Kendal area. The Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit is on the same hospital site as A&E.

 

There is a Digital X ray link with Westmorland General Hospital. A spiral CT scanner is sited at the R.L.I. providing a 24 hr service. There is a MR scanner sited alongside. The Neurosurgery and Burns specialties are based at The Royal Preston Hospital.

 

The A&E department sees 42,000 new patients per year. The department was upgraded in 1996 following the opening of a purpose built department. It contains separate facilities for resuscitation (with X-ray gantry), stretcher cases, walking cases and children. There is no short-stay ward attached to the department.  A Helipad was opened summer 2004.

 

A Flying Squad vehicle is based outside the department and is "called out" for multiple trauma, primarily road traffic accidents. A Consultant is the team leader for the Flying Squad. Equipment in the department includes 6 oximetry/E.C.G./B.P. monitors, 2 defibrillators with external pacing facility and a Transpac portable ventilator.

 

 

2.   DUTIES OF THE POST IN LANCASTER

 

a)   Reception of all Accident and Emergency patients;  assessment and treatment as necessary and referral to other  specialties.

b)  Participation in duty rota. See copy rota attached.

c) On-call for flying squad with senior doctor and reception of multiple  trauma.

 

3.   TEACHING

 

At the start of the post there is an induction day followed by 12 all day Wednesday  teaching tutorials. All SHOs are encouraged to attend the Bolton Regional A&E Teaching course on the first weekend of the post (duties to be covered by locums).

 

There is a one day attachment with a paramedic. Protected audit sessions have been funded. There are in addition regular orthopaedic meetings on Mondays.

 

Student Nurses are regularly attached to the department in addition to Medical Students on secondments and elective periods. From 2004 there will be a regular attachment of final year medical students from The Liverpool Medical School.  There is a rotational post from the SpR A&E training program in Cape Town, South Africa. The department also trains local ambulance staff for paramedic skills.

There is a departmental book, video library and P.C. with teaching package in the Doctor's room. The New Post-Graduate Centre/Library is also on-site  adjacent to A&E. The post is recognised for training for the MFAEM, M.R.C.S., M.R.C.P. and for G.P training.

6.   CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

 

Holidays are allocated prior to starting the post (a 2 week and 1 week slot), there is no additional cover for holidays. Bank Holiday lieu leave is allocated in holidays and shortened hours in “F” week.

 

 

7.   GENERAL NOTES

 

Lancaster is a University city, close to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay. This is an area of great natural beauty and offers exceptional outdoor facilities. The M6 provides easy road access to The Lakes and Manchester / Liverpool.

The Staff Grade doctor and registrar  work in the department 1 in 4 weekends*. The registrar @ works 1 in 4 Fridays on-call after 1700-0300.  $ 1100-1800 after weekend duties

 

Reduced hours on "F" week allows for Bank Holidays not included in holidays.
