Genealogy - an Introduction
People will not look forward to posterity who never look backward to their ancestors. Edmund Burke (1729-97) Irish-born Whig and man of letters
Archibald Crouch, taken in 1956 Looking back to our ancestors has become a popular past time over recent years. Many magazines, books and societies exist to aid those of us who are interested in unearthing our family histories. Yet everybody's search is unique to them. The problems and questions that each of us have to ask as we delve into the past are special to the history that we are tracing. What follows is an account of my familys history and some of the problems and obstacles that I have encountered along the way. I hope that this account will be of use to those starting out on their own pathway to the past and of general interest in its own right. It is designed to be read in chapter order. There are further links and a glossary and resources guide available from the menus at the top of each page. You can also e-mail me about any aspect of this site from the feedback link on the homepage. Good luck with your own genealogy. |
