Production, Performed 9th to 11th March 2000
by
Richard Harris
Directed by John Fedorowycz
Visiting Hour was performed as a set of five one-act plays, each depicting a different hospital scene at visiting hour. The production was somewhat different to traditional plays performed by HATS.
Firstly, the play was performed 'in the round', with the set positioned on one side of the village hall floor, rather than on the stage. This brought many of the audience within a very close proximity of the action. Authenticity was greatly enhanced by the use of many hospital props loaned from Evesham Community Hospital. The internal decor of the village hall itself also contributed to the creation of a realistic hospital ambience.
The theme of the plays varied - some were funny, whilst others were more thought provoking. This mixture of humour and pathos created a balanced evening of entertainment, which was well received by full houses on all three nights. Another first was the integration into one of the plays of pre-recorded television pictures, filmed at BBC studios in Wood Norton, near Evesham.
The write up in The Journal was complimentary, acknowledging that this was "an ambitious choice for an amateur company". The convincing set and the work of the technicians came in for particular praise. The article ended by saying that "the overall presentation was most commendable and the director and his team have every reason to feel proud of their efforts".
