Harvington Baptist Chapel

Welcome! This is a new venture for us, designed with the idea of keeping us in touch, and up to date with what's going on at chapel. It is hoped to repeat quarterly, the next issue being in August, your comments and suggestions and ideas please!

You can contact Lynn at:

e-mail: merrix@email.com

What's new

In the entrance to the chapel you will see there are some brightly coloured 'busy bags' hanging on the wall.

These are designed to keep our younger visitors happy, each suitably stocked for a suggested age. So, if you see a younger person sitting there (or having trouble staying sitting there!) Or if you bring along a visitor who might appreciate one, just help yourself and return after the service.

For your diary

8 May Quarterly church meeting

July 7 Brian and Vicky's golden wedding celebration

July 27 Informal Supper in the village hall with Bob James. This is designed as a social event, and for those of you who were able to hear Bob when he came to our service last year, know you are in for a treat. It is also another great opportunity to get together as a church family.

August Football + with a difference. This is going to be an afternoon /evening event for the whole village to get involved in, the + to include amongst other things, a circus artiste who will teach you some of the tricks of his trade. The date is still to be finalised but we will let you know asap, so watch this space, details to follow later!

Thanks

Special thanks to Ruth for the excellent skittles evening she organised at the Coach and Horses recently. Over thirty of us, as well as friends and family got together and would like to say...... whats next Ruth?

From Neil

13+ group starts up again after the Easter break on 4 May for a ten week run with breaks for half term and 29 June. Special guests have been included in the programme, along with a football night, ice skating a meal out.

10+ Likwise start back the same week, on 6 May, with breaks for half term and on 1st July. They have a similar programme of outings discussions and visitors culminating on 22 July with a summer fun night.

A lot of work goes into putting the programme together, if anyone feels that they could offer help, to either of these groups, even on an occasional basis, help with transport etc.. Please see Neil, who would value your support.

Prayers

Every couple of weeks Neil and Vicky produce a prayer diary for us to under pin with prayer as a church the things they are trying to achieve in our community and sometimes, the larger one we are all a part of. Please support this wonderful initiative by taking one to pin on your fridge!

Talking of prayers...Prayer Breakfasts are up and running again.

A few weeks ago a group of us met with Peter Hayes just before morning service for breakfast and prayer time in the chapel. This was very special and thanks must go to Hugh for organising it and also for table service during it!

The next Prayer Breakfast will be on 28 April, a Saturday this tim5e, and is being led by Neil. This will take a slightly different format in that breakfast at the chapel will by followed by a short walk through the village to the parish church for a prayer time there with the emphasis being on prayer for the youth project and all the youngsters it reaches (and has yet to reach) within our village. There is still time to sign up on the sheet at the back of the hall, and if you would like to come along but aren't sure until nearer the time contact Lynn . . . or Neil so we can get the catering right.

Following on from this, it is hoped that Prayer Breakfasts will become a regular monthly slot in our calendar.

Thoughts to take with you......

Can I say the Lord's Payer?

I cannot say " Our ", if I live in a water-tight spiritual compartment;
if I think a special place in Heaven is reserved for my denomination.

I cannot say " Father ", if I do not demonstrate the relationship in my daily life.
I cannot say "which art in Heaven", if I am so occupied with the earth that I am laying up no treasure there.

I cannot say " Hallowed be Thy Name ", if I, who am called by His name, am not holy.

I cannot say " Thy Kingdom come ", if I am not doing all in my power to hasten its coming.

I cannot say " Thy will be done", if I am questioning, resentful of or disobedient to His will for me.

I cannot say " on earth as it is in Heaven", if I am not prepared to devote my life here to His service.

I cannot say " Give us this day our daily bread", if I'm living on past experiences.

I cannot say " forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us", if I harbour a grudge against anyone.

I cannot say " Lead is not into temptation ",if I deliberately place myself, or remain in a position where I am likely to be tempted.

I cannot say " Deliver us from evil ",if I am not prepared to fight in the spiritual realm with the weapon of prayer.

I cannot say " Thine is the Kingdom ", if I do not accord the King the disciplined obedience of a loyal subject.

I cannot say " Thine is the power ", if I fear what men may do; or what my neighbour may think.

I cannot say " Thine is the glory ", if I am seeking glory for myself. I cannot say " Forever and forever ", if my horizon is bounded by the things of time.

I cannot say " Amen ", if I do not also add, " Cost what it may, " for to say this prayer will cost EVERYTHING.

This poem is inspired by "The Lord's Prayer" found in Matthew 6:9-13. Indeed prayer is not only an act of speaking, but it also means that we pray loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. (Matthew 22:37)

Kitchen cupboard

Vicky's lemonade For those of you who have been to bible study and tasted this, you will know this is the 'real' stuff, try it and see, and could I please have a recipe for summer?

2 lemons
3 lbs sugar
4 pints water
2 oz citric acid (available from chemists)

Cut away peel from lemons. Place in liquidiser or food processor with half a pint of water. Switch to top speed for 1 minute.

Pour in saucepan with remaining water and bring to boil.

Extract juice from lemons add this with sugar and citric acid to saucepan.

Stir to dissolve the sugar then strain and pour in to hot sterilised jars/bottles.

Use as desired with diluting with water or soda water.

You will never want the white fizz again!
