HyperTerminal

 to Connections    to Home Page

Introduction

You can use HyperTerminal and a modem to connect to a remote computer, even if it isn't running Windows. You can also use HyperTerminal to send and receive files using the Transfer menu **, or to connect to computer bulletin boards and other information programs. To start HyperTerminal:

1          Click the Start button.

2          Point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click HyperTerminal. (or Accessories, Communications)

3          Double-click Hypertrm.exe

You can open an existing connection:File, Open......

or type a new connection tele no. into the Name window of

the Connection Description box

and connect to a BBS or program service:

BBS Charges:

On connecting to a BBS, you receive a white or coloured front screen - usually you have to enter twice for anything to appear. After which you may see a menu with a prompt mark waiting for you to make an input.

Be aware the BBS's that allow you to download free usually make their money from a percentage of a high premium, peak call charge (e.g: £0.50 per minute). You can find BBS's on normal lines but you have to pay a subscription fee before you can download files.

 Other Services:

Some companies offer services accessible via terminal links such as HyperTerminal and these are not high premium cost lines. They exist to give service to customers e.g: downloading programs such as BIOS, drivers...etc. The same companies will usually have a web-site which you can access via the Internet

** To gain access to files and printers on another computer running Windows, ...................then use Dial-Up Networking rather than HyperTerminal.
