(click here to go to ‘Web Page Uploading’ )

Web Page creation involves the use of HTML (HyperText Makeup Language)....but fortunately today you don't have to learn to write in that language in order to create a page.

Word97/2000 and Frontpage from Microsoft let you design a web page as you would do in word processing, and, translates it to HTML as you save the page

Using Microsoft Word

To get a blank web page, with menus different from normal Word:

File, New, <Web Pages tab>, Blank Web Page, OK

In the blank web page, put in a page background:

Format, Background <select a colour or select more colours, or choose a fill effect>,

Your Page Contents - Tip

The easiest way to arrange text and graphics is to use a table

You can show or hide borders between the cells in the table.  You can align contents of a cell.

There are many advanced features in HTML and the forthcoming XML or XHTML, but you will have to learn these as they are beyond the scope of this page.

Moving around -inside a page/to a page

Bookmarks & Hyperlinks

Inserting a bookmark and hyperlinks, means that the viewer can quickly move to a point in a web page. This page has several bookmarks in it - of course they are not visible.

If you wish to quickly move to a definite point in a document, firstly go to that place and then use Insert, Bookmark, type in a new name and click OK.

Now at any point in the document you can quickly jump to the bookmark by using a hyper link.

To move around inside a Page

At any point, for example at a reference point e.g. see 'Menu', see 'Costings Section'..etc. ..........

.........select the word 'Menu' or 'Costings Section'.

Use Insert, Hyperlink or the Hyperlink tool on the toolbar.......

.........select the bookmark name then click OK. Note: The top Browse box is for hyperlinking to a different document

To Move To A Different Page

Place a book mark in the destination document and then place the hyperlink in the first document.

See Web Page - Uploading to get the pages to the Server

Web Page uploading involves sending your page(s) to your Internet Service Providers server.

This is done using a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) capable program

Fortunately programs to do this such as CuteFTP, WS-FTP, Windows Commander are freely available from the Internet or provided on computer magazine CDs.

Using an FTP program:

Buy CuteFTP from:

(Note: if one link goes down/out of existence, then try another)

or get the program from a free CD with a computer magazine or look on your ISP’s setup CD (Tiscali offer WS-FTP freely on their account setup CD).

Eg: Server address:  website.lineone.net

Eg: Your user name: . michael_small

Eg: Your password:  passme

On running CuteFTP, click the Add Site button to get the following window.

Enter anything for the site label but be accurate with the Host Address (contact your ISP if you need help on this). Enter your user ID (usually your user name) and your access password. Click OK when done.

·         Back at the first screen, select the site label name e.g: website.lineone.net

·         Click the Connect button

·         When connected transfer the files by dragging a file(s) from your window to the server's window (shown below: your window = left, server window = right)

and that's it - disconnect the FTP program

Go to the Internet and get your site
