Problems in Installing/Re-Installing Win98 Upgrade, or Full Win98 Version

If you have more than one hard drive and any of the drives other than the C Drive have Win95 or other operating system files still present on them, then the Windows98 setup might report that you already have an operating system and refuse to go further.

This will still happen even if the C Drive has just been cleared with formatting.

To rectify this problem ON THE OTHER DRIVE (NOT THE C DRIVE) delete Io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com, netlog.txt and any other system files in the root directory of that drive. If you have a Windows folder on that drive it too can be deleted. Once the other hard drive(s) have been cleared of previous system elements, the upgrade or new setup will proceed normally.

Sound Problem in Microsoft Netmeeting

Older Sound Cards: A recent problem emerges in the use of sound with video. If video and sound will not work synchronously giving interrupted sound and video then it is likely that the sound card is not accepting FULL DUPLEX. In this case you must upgrade your sound card. If you have bad quality when using Microsoft Netmeeting or other audio/video Internet/local services e.g: Vdophone, then check your settings for Full Duplex.

Registry problems after installing Win98

A situation can arise when seemingly Win98 installs without any apparent problem, but the first time the Desktop appears, an error in the Registry is notified and the system will be restarted to repair it - however the re-start only results back to the same problem - a vicious circle.

What has occurred here is that the Registry error is likely to be due to a bad entry in the Registry concerning a hardware device on, or attached to, the motherboard, eg: a CPU adaptor card (which takes a socket 70,370 chip and the card then fixes into a Slot1 slot as if the CPU were a Slot1 type)., or some other expansion card or on-board motherboard device. The only thing to do in this particular case is to replace the device and reinstall Win98. If this does not work, replace the motherboard and try installation again. It is unlikely that the CPU or memory is at fault as this would lead to random errors DURING and not after Win98 installation.
