If More Than One Person it to use the Same PC
Each person can have their own Username and Password....and customise the way the desktop looks and works.
This is now quite easy to do in Windows98, in the Control Panel, just complete the 'Create New User' wizard which you can start by clicking 'Users', then the New User button.
After entering a new Username, password and confirming the password, click Next.
From the items in the list presented, check the items you want to personalise.
e.g:
Note: At this stage you are just selecting items to be included (personalisation comes later).
You may create copies of existing items, or create new items.
Creating
new items will mean that you must recreate them and set them up.Copying
items means that the items will have existing settings until you later personalise them.
Starting to use the new user profile
To evoke the new user profile use Start, Log Off <current user> and enter the new Username and password on the re-start.
The Desktop background, shortcuts to programs/folders and settings of program items ...etc...etc., can all be adjusted to give a distinct look, fell and usage in the new profile.
NOTE: That the details for any new profile, e.g: Startup programs, the Desktop...etc are not held as normal in the sub-folders of the main Windows folder but in the Windows/Profiles/<profile name>/ <folder name>
e.g: Windows\Profiles\User2\Desktop and not Windows\Desktop
User's own Internet & Mail Settings
In each user profile you can have distinct Internet and Mail settings.
In a profile you can use a distinct Dial-Up Network Connection to connect to an ISP account, and have a distinct email account(s) for that user profile -
This means that when a user logs on with their own username and password, the Internet connection will connect to their own account and Outlook Express will send & receive email using their own email addressed account.
User's own Internet account
To do this firstly make a new connection in Dial-Up Networking, and configure that connection according to ISP requirements (if it's a sub-account of an existing main account, then copy the main account settings with exception of the account's username and password). If you haven't got ISP sub-accounts then contact your ISP. If you have a main account with Lineone, choose ME on the main Lineone page, then Accounts on the next and click on the first Sub-account to set it up.
Next set your browser (e.g Internet Explorer) to this new Dial-Up Networking connection.
User's own Email account
To set the new profile to the new user's email account, then use Outlook Express - Tools, Accounts and add a new account giving the account username, password and other required settings.
