Incorrect Dial Up Connection - personal or server settings

Most people encounter problems on Connections, either on connecting to their ISP (Internet Service Provider) via Internet Explorer (for web pages), or Outlook Express or Outlook, for email.

  1. In the majority of cases, this is due to changes made to the user name and/or password or the modem type is incorrect, or a simple case of the ISP's password server being down.
  2. In other cases it may be due to changes made to the Dial-Up settings.

If repeated connection attempts over a 24hr period result in the user name/password not being accepted then it is likely that your username and password are incorrect or you just need to set them again in the Dial-Up connection.

If the username and password are correct but you cannot make a dial-up connection, then the Dial-Up Server settings may be wrong. Shown under are the normal settings for an ISP connection, but first just double check on your username and password and modem type..

Username/password/modem type:

To check or renter your username and password you can do this by clicking the ISPs connection in Dial Up Networking, but it will not save these until the connection is successful (you should really do this in Internet Options..see below)

Dial-Up Server Settings:

You can check your Server settings by right clicking the ISPs dial-up connection in My Computer, Dial-Up Networking window. Left click properties, then the Server Types tab:

Server Settings:

Notice that in the top section only Enable Software Compression is ticked. More Importantly in the bottom section only TCP/IP is ticked. (NetBEUI and IPXSPX are for other types of network settings. For an explanation of these other network protocols see:CompCom.htm).

You can also quickly check the TCPIP settings by clicking it's button on the Server Type tab. There are 3 sections here. Normally the top choice is applied in the first 2 sections and the bottom section has both features ticked. Click OK to return to the Server Type tab.

Whilst you still have the settings up you can click the General tab and check that the telephone number to your ISP is correct (sometimes you may need to include the code with the telephone number and untick 'Use Area Code & Dialing Properties'.

Check that your modem is shown in the 'Connect Using' section. (if you have changed your modem, it may be that you have not changed the modem for this connection, click the down arrow and select the new modem). Apply & OK any changes to the connection.

Internet Options - username/password/modem type

If you have Internet Explorer5 or above you should be able to get to the settings via Control Panel, Internet Options. (If not click Internet Explorer on your Desktop, then work offline, and look for Internet Options under the Tools or View Menu),

In Internet Options, go to the Connections Tab, and click Settings button (or Properties button for earlier versions). Now you can check that your username is correct and re-enter the password if necessary. Next click the Properties button. Now you can check the Tel No and Modem in the General tab. Check that your modem is shown in the 'Connect Using' section. (if you have changed your modem, it may be that you have not changed the modem for this connection, click the down arrow and select the new modem). Apply & OK any changes to the connection, and the server settings (as mentioned above) in the Server tab. Click OK back until completed (if you see an Apply button in black, then click that as well).

Email Settings

Both Internet Explorer and Outlook/OutlookExpress use the Dial-up Connection for your ISP. If you have not checked the Dial-up Connect, read the detail above.

Internet Explorer and Outlook(or Outlook Express) hand over to the Dial-up connection, then once connected return back to their respective routines (e.g: back to IE or back to Outlook).

At this point if your mail settings are incorrect the ISP's mail server cannot validate/authorise you for access to mail.

Go offline (Hang Up) but not out of Outlook Express. Next Select Tools, Accounts from the menu. Click the Mail tab and single click the default mail account name, click Properties button.

The General tab should have your email address in it.

The Servers tab should have the outgoing mail SMTP server name e.g: for Lineone: smtp.lineone.net,

and the incoming mail server: e.g: for Lineone: pop.lineone.net.

The 'Log on Using' section should show your account name (without the @ extension; eg: If full access name = j.bloggs@lineone.net, the email account name = j.bloggs).

The correct password (shown in ****) should be entered. If in doubt re-type the password.

In The Connection tab, 'Connect using my phone line' should be ticked (unless you are using the modem via a network (LAN) or a 3rd party dialer).

The Modem section should show the Dial-up Connection name from Dial-Up Networking (if not, use either the Properties button to edit the Dial-Up connection, or use the Add button to add a new connection in Dial-Up Networking.

Apply any changes and OK the properties window. Close Outlook Express and re-start to use the new settings, go back on-line to receive email. For general problems with email see: email problems

Start button, Favourites - a fast way to start Explorer and get a site:

If you have intermittent problems after click the Internet Explorer icon on the Desktop, why not try getting on-line to your ISP or favourite web site, by starting Explorer and getting your site, by simply using the Start button on the Taskbar.

Click Start button, then click Favorites, then click a site from your favorites list. This will automatically start Internet Explorer and the Connection window, then once connected go straight to your favorite site - certainly faster this way to get online to those sites.

Q. Internet Explorer is set to go to a homepage I don't want - How do I change it?

A. Start Internet Explorer, and let it go to the current homepage. After that page has loaded in, click in the address bar and type in the url of the page you wish to be your new homepage (e.g: http://www.lineone.net). Press the Enter button on your keyboard to bring the new page in. After the new page has loaded in, click Tools, Internet Options. (View, Internet Options in IE 4). On the General tab, in the Homepage box, click on Use Current to set the new page as your new home page.
