WHO ARE THE RUBETTES

This is my appreciation page to the 70's Glam rock group, The Rubettes.

The Rubettes, were a product of a group of sessions singers that just happened to come together. The year was 1974 and glam rock had just started swinging. When someone mentions the 70's, what groups do they remember ?? Gary Glitter, Bay City Rollers, Mud, Suzie Q, Slade and of course a string of soul groups. There won't be many who will mention the Rubettes in that breath.

From: 18 May 1974

SUGAR BABY LOVE / Rubettes

Until the 15 June 1974

So, what does that mean ?? "Well," I hear you say, "The Rubettes only had one hit, Sugar Baby Love. didn't they ??"
The answer to that is - wrong !! they did have one
NUMBER ONE HIT with Sugar Baby Love, but these guys went on to have a string of others too. The problem was, that this extremely talented bunch were buried by the opposition, and never achieved the high status they truly deserved. From December 1974 until October 1978, the Rubettes released 8 albums and from January 1974 until May 1979 released 22 singles. Not bad going really !!! They were an innovative group, wrote their own music and could really play their instruments. Manufactured they may have been at the beginning, but they soon showed that they could do it on their own.

Now we are in the 90's and the Rubettes are still here. They play gigs in the UK, as well as France and Germany. The list of these gigs are pretty impressive too. It seems that with the 70's revival of late, the band have found their nirvana.

(It also keeps a Rubette head like myself very happy indeed !!!)

What is so special about these guys, is that they take the time to meet up with fans, old and new and their gigs are aimed at everyone, from 8 to 80. More often than not, there is a chance to have a chat with them afterwards, or get autographs. They are just such nice people. there is also a Rubettes Official World Fan Club, which has a substantial following.

There are other web pages with the Rubettes theme around, so be sure to pay them a visit. The fact that you came here in the first place, says that you're interested. When you do visit, you will get a better picture of this sadly, under-rated band. There are many of their staunch fans still around (albeit, we are a lot older these days),who still love and admire them.

If you get the chance. get a cd.GET LISTENING !!I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
