CYCLE TRAINING IN CARDIFF

Each year in the authority, approximately 1800 primary-school children undergo cycle training, usually conducted off-road in school yards, where specially designed cycle layouts have been provided. Since 2004 a number of primary schools have participated in on-road cycle training courses in selected areas of the city and these courses are set to increase.

Cycle stands are now being installed in an increasing number of primary and secondary schools in Cardiff, and as a standard practice a 'Safe Cycling Code' is available for schools to implement.

Where schools participate in Safer Routes to School projects, and subject the WAG funding, cycle tracks/paths/cycle stands and/or lockers are installed, and this has taken place at Howell's, Cantonian, Bishop of Llandaff, Cathedral School, Ysgol Plasmawr, Llanedeyrn and Llanishen High Schools. The Road Safety Unit works very closely with schools who support cycling as an alternative means of school travel, and we periodically undertake 'Cycling Awareness' sessions in High Schools prior to the offering of an on-road cycle training course. We are hoping to provide cycle training courses to Cardiff West High Schools in the autumn term.

Recent surveys indicate that schools are experiencing an increase in the number of pupils showing an interest in, or riding to and from school each day.
