NEWS FROM CARDIFF COUNCIL

Cardiff’s new Cycling Officer is to be Lou Lusardi, currently CTC Cymru’s campaigns officer. He was in on the writing of the Welsh Walking and Cycling Strategy, so we look forward to his bringing its policy on sharing off-road space (pedestrians and cyclists) into Cardiff. Lou will start the Cardiff job in February.

The shine is wearing off Cardiff’s new Lib-Dem regime. Cllr Jim James’s promise at our AGM to meet us to progress cycling issues has not materialised. His officers cancelled the last meeting of the Cycling Liaison Committee.

The trial of cycling on Queen Street promised 18 months ago has been shelved. Instead, without consulting us, they introduced ‘Christmas Crackdown’. The authorities spent greater efforts in catching cyclists than catching pickpockets on Queen Street.

Instead of sticking to the national agreement to spot-fine only ‘reckless’ cyclists – those ‘riding furiously’ under the old law – the police apparently picked on the careful, cautious cyclists.
