A-levels at Grade A in English Literature, French, German, Latin and Russian.
1966-1969 Trinity College, Cambridge
First Class Honours in Modern Languages (French and German)
1969-1972 Research at Cambridge and in Vienna (1970-71). Ph.D. awarded 1977 for a thesis on Johann Nestroy, the Viennese comic actor and dramatist.
Employment: Lecturer in German at the University of Southampton since 1972.
Particular Responsibilities: Language Teaching in First and Final Year
Various Literature courses, including Austrian Literature (Karl Kraus, Johann Nestroy), Children’s Literature, Romanticism, C19 Poetry and Goethe.
British Studies (Introduction to British Life and Institutions, esp. from 1945 to the present, concentrating on British Identity as mediated through British films.)
NB I have had special responsibility for a small group of German scholarship students every year since 1974, and developed my own brand of British Studies, involving Children’s Literature, British Humour, Folk-Customs, Modern Drama inc. TV etc.
I have directed and/or acted in some twenty plays in German during my time at Southampton. (I have also been Chair of Southampton University Players, directing two shows at the Nuffield, one of them my own adaptation of David Copperfield, as well as acting in several others, both there and in the open air at Netley Abbey.)
Practical Experience of EFL: I have taught on summer courses at various times since 1969, in Torquay, Austria, and Winchester. For several years I ran a course preparing students at the University of Southampton to be language assistants abroad.
I have a clean driving licence (held since 1990) and the usual range of IT skills (Word, Wordperfect, Excel, e-mail, Internet).
