In the autumn of 1999 The Fool Miles found himself in the
presence of technology and so, drooling ever so slightly, he seized this
opportunity and set about creating an album that would change the musical
face of Swansea forever. He failed - largely because he didn't live, work,
ever visit or know anybody who was in any way involved with Swansea. However,
despite Swansea's almost total ignorance of the musical album taking shape
in two Brighton bedrooms and a Brighton kitchen, our intrepid hero soldiered
on until he held in his hands a round piece of plastic that made noises
when put into an appropriate machine.
It was comprised of 14 tracks which when played to We Am Janet's collection
of test humans produced sensations of pleasure and entertainment; all
except for track 6 (which promoted feelings of panic and isolation) and
track 3 (which once made somebody make a noise that sounded a bit like
a field-mouse saying, "Myeah," but has otherwise prompted little
response.) From the orchestral sweep of the opening Bringeth on the
Noise to the swagger of the closing Helping Hand, this was
an album unfettered by the rational, elevated by truth, pickled in quality
and all the other sorts of meaningless lies that seem to collect around
musical reviews. But I think it's safe to say that it did have a certain
something.
