Biography Once described by Brighton's Source magazine as a "one man psychedeloid," We Am Janet was originally born in August 1998. The man responsible was Mr Roger Miles, hereafter referred to as the Fool Miles, when he recorded a very silly birthday tune for his friend Daniel. It was called Happy Birthday Daniel and was designed so that if you were to have a birthday party and nobody came, and you listened to the song on your own, in a darkened room, it might drive you mad. The Fool Miles was surprised to discover that people rather liked it so he carried on with the project, using the power of home computing, a microphone, a couple of guitars and various parts of his anatomy to home record an album called Hello Sailor. The people he played it to seemed to enjoy it so he carried on with the project. Four years down the line and there have now been three Janet albums and a split CD EP with Pog. We Am Janet have been gigging sporadically in and around Brighton, usually as a solo performance by the Fool Miles and his acoustic guitar but increasingly often as permutations of guitar, bassist, drummer and keyboard player, although the drummer has now walked out on the band. September 2002 saw the Janet solo act take part in the first Beat Bedsit tour, along side Peel faves Pico; the punk duo Chester, the uniquely brilliant electronic beat poets Project Adorno and Pog. A diary of this tour, written by Praveen of Project Adorno, can be found here. I hate trying to describe any music but I especially hate trying to describe We Am Janet. Nevertheless such things are expected so here goes: It's an eclectic and curious blend of daft dance beats, crazy jazz cornet blowing, mangled up guitar riffing/prodding/stroking, all supported on a healthy bedrock of melody. Songs about taxidermists and ever widening beer guts sit side by side with songs about pain, despair, death and moose. A glimpse into a world shot through with melancholy but always hopeful about tomorrow. A far better way to get a grasp would be to listen to the MP3s on the MP3s page. |
