VERNON BAKER BA 1934 - 2005 |
| |
Vernon's long association with the Royal Lifesaving Society goes back to the
1940s when he took his first Bronze medallion. In 1964 he joined the (North)
Lancashire Executive Committee and has held many different offices
throughout the years ever since. These included service as a Branch Trustee,
Publicity Officer and Chairman. However, it is for his dedicated service as
Branch Treasurer – a position he held for 25 years, 1975-2000 for which he
will always be remembered.
Vernon became a member of the North West Regional Committee in 1981, and was
appointed Deputy Chairman in 1985. His involvement in the financial aspect
of lifesaving then led him to seek membership of the National Executive
Committee (1985 –1992) He became a member of the National Finance Working
Party, finally serving as National Treasurer, RLSS UK. Lancashire has been
fortunate to benefit from Vernon's expertise in the world of finance for so
many years.
The many National and Commonwealth awards presented to Vernon include:
Recognition Badge 1972 and Bar 1979
Service Cross 1987
Hon. UK LIFE MEMBER 1991
Hon. UK GOVERNOR 2000
THE QUEEN'S JUBILEE MEDAL 2002
As Branch President-elect, Vernon was due to be installed at our next AGM to
be held in March 2006. It is sad that he will miss his Presidential year, as
this was the only office he never actually held. His presence will be very
much missed.
