Fleetwood Sea Front – Venue
for Coastal open water awards |
| |
| The beach for recreation
and water activities is situated south of Fleetwood Pier and
extends south to a point adjacent to the Promenade Road car
park, an estimated distance of about 600 metres. |
| |
| Within these 600 metres
is the Lifeguard station, together with flagpoles at each end of
the patrolled stretch subject to certain precautions would be
considered to be safe, especially between the months of
May-September, when seasonal staff are employed. |
| |
- The beach is of
pebble and sand near the promenade, turning to soft muddy
sand as one gets further out. Weaver Fish and Spiny Sea
Urchins are also prevalent.
|
- Beach levels vary
considerably especially near the break waters.
|
- When the tide is
flooding, the current is south to north, and the reverse on
the ebbing tide.
|
- During the time when
the tide is flowing, personnel on the beach could be cut off
on the south end towards Rossall Point, but the incoming
tide, which comes in fast and deepens very quickly.
|
- Signs are posted from
the north flagpole and prohibit swimming from this point to
the mouth of the river.
|
- During spring tides,
when combined with strong offshore winds invariably the Red
flags would be flying.
|
- Due to the flow and
ebb currents of the tide it makes sense to use the beach
area to safe effect and to be on the south end on the flow
and the north end on the ebbing tide.
|
- The facilities at the
nearby Fleetwood Leisure Centre are available to all the
lifeguards, casualties and candidates.
|
- Food and refreshments
are on sale at the leisure centre, the Marine Hall and at
the pier area.
|
- Marine Hall and
Promenade Road car parks provide ample car parking
facilities.
|
- Toilet facilities at
Marine Hall car park
|
- Road access via
Marine Hall car park and Promenade Road car park for
emergency vehicles should the need arise. Public telephone
facilities are available at the marine Hall and Fleetwood
Leisure Centre.
