Greetings Robert

Thank you for the information.
Have seen bits on the "Isle of Wight" family on the BMD's etc

As far as I am aware there is no known link to the "Bethnal Green/Shoreditch" families.

We seem to have 3 lines which start in the 1700's with only recorded births as a guide. One line is in the hands of the "Australian Lady".

The New Zealand link has not been recovered from IGI data although someone in NZ entered some data which does not totally fit ours.

Following the mechanisation of "Silk Weaving" the Whiters either kept "licenced premises" or made furniture or became "hawkers".
Follow-up.

I am reminded that another section of our forebears were Smith linked to White.
One section of which went to Australia.

Dorothy Houlden one of the descendants wrote a book on their linkage.
( 10 The Strand,Bendigo 3550).
UK information was provided by my elder brother, who also did the family "male" line.

Another couple of bits.1891 census seems to carry no data on them---perhaps he was changing light station.
Florrie May also finished up in Yorkshire as a domestic.

Thanks for info.
An Arthur Whiter dated 1851 emigrated to Australia (destination Melbourne) from Manchester at the age of 83,wondered if he was linked. No second name of the emigration listing.  (Emmanuel Street?)

Yes David, this was undoubtedly my Great Grandfather, Arthur Parsons Whiter.

He came to Australia 3 times. I have a copy of a newspaper clipping to this effect which I thought was published in 1932 on the occasion of his 3rd and final trip (aboard the triple screw steamer Euripides) and which stated that the old Gent first came here to Australia 62 years previously.

This first voyage was aboard the HMVS NELSON a warship which was being delivered to Victoria to initiate a naval fleet.

I will try to scan the clipping for you if you like?

I could also Mail you pictures of Arthur Parsons, and his son Richard if these would assist you in trying to put together the article that you kindly offered.

My Grandfather "Richard Bromby" was a man of immense vigour and resourcefullness. In retirement he loved to paint ships onto canvas,
often placing the cliffs of Dover in the background....ROB

Richard Bromby Whiter

Richard Bromby Whiter was born at Cowes,  Isle of Wight on 29th December 1884 one of fourteen children raised by  ARTHUR PARSONS WHITER and his wife Annie Maria (nee BROMBY).

At 10yrs of age Richard was enrolled at the “Greenwich School” where he was given a maritime education in a building still known as the “Queens Home”. From here he entered the Royal Navy serving as a ships “Victualer”.

On 6th October 1908 Richard married MABEL ANNIE SIMMONS (born at Favesham KENT 1880) at Leeds London and departed for Australia on 5th November 1908 aboard the brand new ship “WARATAH” which had just been handed over to her owners Lund's “Blue Anchor Line” a few weeks earlier.

Around 25th November Waratah arrived at Capetown taking on passengers before continuing to Adelaide.

With years at sea in stable well founded ships Richard developed a dislike for the manner in which the Waratah behaved at sea, deciding to disembark when the ship arrived at Melbourne late in December 1908 rather than continue to their destination....Sydney.

Richard and Mabel settled in Williamstown at 54Douglas Parade for a time and their first child Beryl was born on 25th October 1909 at 10 John St Williamstown.

In the ensuing years the Whiters moved to various parts of Victoria and following the death of Richards mother, his father  Arthur Parsons came from the U K to visit Richard in 1925 aboard  “ORMUZ” and again in 1932 aboard the “Euripedes”.

Previously, Arthur Parsons Whiter had sailed to Australia in 1868 aboard the H.M.V.S. Nelson which was to become Victoria's first warship. Later he returned in the Royal Navy's Corvette “Challenger” serving until 1895.

In 1914/15 aged 65 Arthur Parsons joined up in the Royal Navy again and was posted as second in command of boom defences at Loch Swilley, Northern Ireland.
