Whiter Family of London
includes links to Maria Popplewell (Marilyn's data)
One of the smaller London families but fairly well documented on Censuses!
Currently sorting the Mary Barber Huguenot etc links
Still without total linkage between Charles and James!
Expanded from original search as various people asked
us if we had any links or data that could help them!
An Australian web-site has information on Anne Imber etc
http://users.rootsweb.com/~indwgw/cowley/index.htm
November 2007 call for birth certificate of George Whiter 1838 to establish parentage.
Believed to link to "Hooten" family via a Margaret Elizabeth Whiter (But which one?)
We began by tracing the family links from:
Charles and Ann Whiter, born about 1790
Quite a lot of data now on the site.
James and Sarah seem to have their own tree
not sure if they are linked in early 1700's

Hi David,
Have been watching your web site, but not for the last few weeks. Will look
again next week. I was going to email you.
I think William Whiter, son of Charles and Ann Wheeler must have been a
bigamist, married to Mary Marr, but living with Maria Popplewell (never found a
marriage cert), as they were both having children at the same time. Also, I have
found Mary Whiter on the Censuses (have subscribed to Ancestry.co.uk) but
although married, never living with her husband. Strange thing though, the elder
children (if my theory is correct) were living with Willaim and Maria.
Additionally I have not found a death certificate for another William Whiter of
the right age at any time in the records.
There is a family story that my grndfather used to tell about someone running
off with a Sunday school teacher. Perhaps it was him. It would also explain why
the offspring used both surnames.
The other thing I wanted to ask you was, did you watch who do you think you are
this week? They were looking at Julia Swahala's family, some of whom, on her
mother's side, were Huguenot weavers in BG.
An historian was talking about the silk trade, and said how it collapsed after around 1850, due to mechanisation, which would explain why all our ancestors became hawkers.
It was also said how poor they became, and a lot of them ended up in the
workhouse, and how all that area around Spitalfields beame the worst slums in
London. I can understand how some of the people on that programme become so
emotional, as it is so sad to think what dreadful lives they led, when our
children are so privileged (they were probably a nasty rough lot that I would
have crossed over if I'd seen them on the street!!)
Have also found Maria POpplewell;s mother. She was Maria Pickall.
