Correspondence

From 08.03.2004

Charles Whiter (born 1838 Turk St, Bethnal Green) married Ann Lugger (b.
abt. 1841 Lifton, Devon) in Plymouth,1867.

Charles' parents were William (b abt 1814, Bethnal Green) and Maria (nee
Popplewell, b abt 1817 Bethnal Green) Whiter.

I am descended form Charles' brother, John.

Without wishing to confuse the issue, I also found some of my ancestors
mistranscribed as White, Whiten or Whites!!

Additionally, my Great Grandfather, John Whiter
sometimes used his mothers maiden name, Popplewell,
corrupted to Popperwell.  All his children took the name Whiter, except my
grandfather, Francis, who called himself Poperwell!

Elizabeth Whiter married John Frogley Darby and we thought had one child.

It turns out she also had 2 boys that we have traced and the possibility of
another girl.
Elizabeth Darby married Charles Cooper(of dubious data) and produces my
Mother,a sister and two traceable boys, although we think there is a Sidney
in there somewhere.
I and my twin met Elizabeth Cooper either before or after the War,cannot
remember which and my twin has been gone twenty years so I will have to
scratch my head.
Both of the Elizabeths are  Not recorded  as having re-married and for neither
of them do we have positive Death Certificates

Noticing you mention Turk Street,
Charles Whiter, the brother of John, my great grandfather
was born 23 November 1839 at 9 Turk Street, son of William Whiter, weaver
(later gives his occupation as hawker) and Maria formerly Popplewell.

The next known offspring to me is George Whiter, born 27 September 1843 in
35 Old Castle Street, Bethnal Green.  He married Mary Ann Eacalsall 10 June
1867 The Queens Road Chapel, Haggerstone.

The only census listing I have found to date for William and Maria is 1851,
8 Spicer Street, Mile End New Town, Whitechapel.  I have not traced the
Whiters to either of the mentioned addresses.

Just been through Steppingstones 1841 Middlesex discs.

Have found that Tyssen and Turk Street book is not there!!
Hope that the proposed S&N version of London 1841 includes it.Looks to have
a certain import as to the relationships

1841 Census of Bethnal Green (SandN version)
gives
691-3    page 116   Right-hand side               23 Virginia Row
                                       actuals!
William Whiter         25  (25to 29)
Maria                         20 (20 to 24)
William                        9
James                         7
Charles                    15 months
Thomas                        5 months

Which leads me to thinking that Maria is a second wife and the last two are
hers!
Next question           when John?

Had a look in the Popplewell family lists---no Maria married 1837 to 1840.

Looked at Mary Ann Eacalsall, since you gave the date and it is recorded
1867 Q2  Shoreditch  1 c   507

have obtained copies of both the birth (13 Sept 1840) and death (11 Jan
1842) certificates of Elizabeth Whiter, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth
(nee McCauley).

My gt gt grandfather, William (1814-1873) registered her death.  He gives
his address, 35 Old Castle St, which is where he was residing when 2 of my
gt grandfather's brothers were born.

Also Elizabeth was born in 1840 in Turk St, No.6.  At that time William was
living 9 Turk street.

He must have been a close relation to have registered the death.

William was born 25 March 1814, son of Charles and Ann, Christened at St
Leonard's Shoreditch, 21 August 1815.

Charles Whiter married Elizabeth McCauley at St Leonard's as well, 26 May
1830.

I also have a reference for William Whiter marrying Mary Ann Marr 20 Feb
1832, St Leonard's Shoreditch.

There are also details of William Whiter (b1832) and James (b1834), both
Christened St Leonard's, Shoreditch, where their parents are named as
William Whiter and Mary, so as you suggested, I think she probably died, and
William then married (or did not) Maria Popplewell.

I have also found another probable offspring of Charles and Ann's,
Christened at St Leonard's; John b. 11 Feb 1826, c. 6 Mar 1826.

All this information was gathered from the IGI site.

You have solved the mystery.
The researchers have just been through St Matthews for marriages!
Their findings!
"Marriages - St Matthew  Bethnal Green - using the indexes available we
searched 1802-1811, 1811-1812, 1813-1818, 1818-1828, 1828-1829, 1829 to June
1837 but regretfully found no occurance of the name Whiter."

Now we know--- they were all getting wed in Shoreditch at St Leonards!!

As far as Rodney John Whiter is concerned; while searching for the death
certificate of my gt grandfather, John Poperwell/Whiter,
I obtained a death  certificate for John Whiter
Reg dist: Hackney, London, 29 April 1916:
When & where: 28 April 1916, Metropolitan Hospital, Kingsland,

 John  Whiter         ,  Male,         66 years (1850)
2 Town Hall Approach, Stoke Newington,
Occupation:   Stationer's assistant, Cause of death: Cerebral Thrombosis,
Informant: J. B. Whiter, son, 85 Cassio Road, Watford.

This branch of Whiter family does not appear to be descended from Charles
and Ann, but if we manage to get back to the previous generation, I would be
surprised if there is not a link.

This John Whiter was married to Mary Ann Reed, 29 April 1872.
His mother was Mary Ann Whiter, no father.
They are quite extensively listed in the IGI site.
I have no links to a Mary Ann Whiter of the right age in my findings, but
have not searched in depth.

I have found a marriage of William Whiter to Mary Ann Marr, but no
death for her, or remarriage to Maria Popperwell, but probably before
official records.

The two elder children of William both have their mothers name as Mary on
the IGI site.

Job (b. 26 February 1850) & Caroline (nee Nugent b. abt. 1858) Whiter

Son of William and Maria Whiter

Been through assorted certificates and left notations on the web-site pages.
We have several matched names, which seem to sort themselves out by "literacy".
James and Elizabeth Watts    James gives his mark
James and Jane Salter           James signs
 Charles  gives his mark
 Henry    signs
Thomas  5 Virginia Row   gives his mark
William  5 Virginia Row  gives his mark
 William and Maria Popplewell   signs
George son of Charles  gives his mark
John    we appear to have Two of them about 10 years apart, must have another look at them.
One could be a Charles missing son.as is a William
Goddards Rents appear to have been the local name for lines of tenements in Anchor Street,Bethnal Green---rather like the invisible Mutton Lane which was on one of our certificates.
Not sure where Spitalfields came in.
Had a look through Anchor street  which is 694-7  ref 32 onwards  pages  110 to 119.
no residual Popplewells
Did have a look in the 1837online info, nothing seen other than that on the site.
you ask the question about John son of William
changing from Whiter to Popplewell.

Have run into that before, boys devoted to Mother---Father is/was a pain in the butt. They then go peculiar, the less angry ones use double-barreled names which satisfies them.

Compiling them into the Certificate page and looking at FTW as well as I go.Notice the double maria and double thomas.

Brenda said that some of the Dell family actually used the name twice whilst the first was alive.Old and Young whatever you call them!!
Going through Bethnal Green looking for Poperwells etc
If they got married or buried there, some must appear on the Census!
I fall over:

Have the 1851 addenda CD from S and N,fascinating reading! You were right!

5 Virginia Row
With Thomas and Betsey (did they convert Elizabeth to Betsey for Mother and
child?) next door at No 4!

Your note explains why there was a 55 year old Maria Popplewell in the Bethnal Green Workhouse.

No husband and daughter left home,no money---not a good combination in Victorian London.

Have the book on 1888 East London, must see if we can flesh out any of the items.

Thomas Charles and Ann are obviously a different couple to Charles and Ann
as their children are born at overlapping dates.

However, James Whiter, son of William and Mary Marr, lived in George Gdns in
1858.

I have two candidates for the birth of Charles from the IGI site, one being
the son of James and Jane, birth 13 Feb 1790, Christened 28 Feb 1790 St
Matthew, BG; and son of John and Mary Whiter, born 13 Jan 1791, Christened
30 Jan 1791, St Matthew, BG.  Any ideas which?

Have listed out Whiters by age as a variant of the actual census data.

Must go through it later and pair up some of those where they have declared different ages over the years

Asked for some more Death Certificates for those who lasted into their 70's.

Also getting the rest of the known Baptisms at St Matthews,Bethnal Green

Would Charles and Ann be in St Leonards marriage register in 1810?
