James Joshua Whiter          Silk Manufacturer

data from "The Herseys"

 More Information!

E-mail received 14th April 2005   from The Herseys

The Whiters are only of peripheral interest to us really
 - I just can't resist the name James Joshua Whiter.

Anyway there is a question mark by one part of your data, viz:

    1871     RG10-312 folio 150 page 300 of 301
Milford House,Stamford Hill,Hackney

James J Whiter  Head Mar  40  Silk Manufacturer  Bethnal Green
Jane                       wife  mar 39                                                ditto
Jane (Spiers?)  Mother in Law   67                                       ditto
Yes the surname is SPIERS - pronounced we believe Spyers.

James Joshua Whiter married his cousin Jane Salter in 1849.

Her mother was born Jane Whiter.
She first married a John Salter and then,
after his death in 1846, she married Charles Spiers.

Charles Spiers makes "my friend Mr James Joshua Whiter"
an executor of his will.

The Spiers are a large and sometimes confusing tribe, many
of whom were silk manufacturers in Spitalfields.

Incidentally, your site doesn't mention trade directories.

If you go to http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ and search for whiter or
salter and whiter (type salter w/3 whiter) you will have some success.

So many thanks for an interesting read - and well done for making
everything freely available.

If you would like further details on any of the above, feel free to contact
us.

Regards

Nick and Anne Hersey

More information  dated 20th September 2005

Hello again

We visited Abney Park Cemetery pursuing our Spiers and stumbled across some  Whiters.

Jane Whiter (our ref ME73) is the first child (we think) of James Joshua
Whiter and Jane nee Salter.  She was buried very close to our Spiers.

William Henry Whiter and family we know nothing about but he was
close by also so we transcribed the monument.

There are other Whiters buried in the cemetery as well.  The website can be
found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~abneypark/abneyy.html ).

Since we have a .txt file of all the Abney Park Whiters from last year
we're attaching it (open it in Excel), also of course transcripts of the
above mentioned Jane and William Henry.
Let us know if you want copies ofthe photos
(if we can find them in the restored data, we haven't looked yet.)
Since we currently subscribe to Ancestry it was easy to follow this
family back to Bethnal Green in 1861 and forward for
some of their lives in Kent.
We can let you have various .jpg images of the censuses and trade
dir entries if you want.

Regards

Nick and Anne Hersey

ps .forgot to say William Henry was a licensed victualler, wife Clara
 - I think you have him on your site!
