Hi David - I am so impressed!! At the moment I can only add some
details from copy certificates that I have obtained.
12 May 1849 marr of JJWhiter to Jane Salter at St.Botolphs, Bishopsgate;
both 'minors'; both living at 22 Steward Street;
witnessed by James & Jane Whiter & AM Martin & EN Martin.
10 Dec 1858 birth of Walter, son of JJW & Jane
@ Providence House, Ponders End, Enfield.
1Mar 1939 death of Walter Whiter, aged 80 publishers clerk rtd.,
of 47 Belvedere Road, Penge.
informant:my husband's grandmother, Dora Whiter of Croydon.
I need to obtain more details of the Australian connection.
I know that Walter met & married Elena Griffiths, originally
from Fishguard, in Melbourne, around 1880.
Their children Walter Dudley & Gladys were born there soon after.
I hope to unearth the rest of my material soon, and come back with more.
Thankyou for sharing your research with me... and the web.. Caroline

Can add that to the page,so any viewer can see if it fits their lineage.
The Australian lady is more interested in the Cowley family, one of whom married
a Whiter.
Great-grandmother was a Whiter, which is why they interest me,and they
had a inclusive family, which was not so in recent generations

More Information!
The Whiters are only of peripheral interest to us really
- I just can't resist the name James Joshua Whiter.
Anyway there is a question mark by one part of your data, viz:
1871 RG10-312 folio 150 page 300 of 301
Milford House,Stamford Hill,Hackney

Yes the surname is SPIERS - pronounced we believe Spyers.
James Joshua Whiter married his cousin Jane Salter in 1849.
Her mother was born Jane Whiter.
She first married a John Salter and then,
after his death in 1846, she married Charles Spiers.
Charles Spiers makes "my friend Mr James Joshua Whiter"
an executor of his will.
The Spiers are a large and sometimes confusing tribe, many
of whom were silk manufacturers in Spitalfields.
Incidentally, your site doesn't mention trade directories.
If you go to http://www.historicaldirectories.org/
and search for whiter or
salter and whiter (type salter w/3 whiter) you will have some success.
So many thanks for an interesting read - and well done for making
everything freely available.
If you would like further details on any of the above, feel free to contact
us.
Regards
Nick and Anne Hersey
The antecedents of Jane Salter are interesting.
Now to trace the Mother(Jane) to her line!
