Kilbey family early 1800's and some later data
Two Kirk girls married in 1840's one to a Kilbey another to a Whiter!
At one time they shared an address in Bethnal Green
Will be looking into this link soon!
Corres. from Maggie Kilbey
Like you, I am interested in family history. When playing on the
internet I was curious to find my GGGGGuncle James Kilbey
notified the death of Mary Whiter in 1844. He lived in the same
house (5 Virginia Row) but I don't know if they were related or
co-lodgers. Interestingly though other members of my family
also lived in 9 Turk St.
In 1851 the Whiters were in Virginia Row no's 4 and 5.
See below!
Have not found that Kilbey family.
But did find for 1851 at 4 Princes street
H107-1542 page1199 of 1300
Richard Kilbey aged 45 Silk weaver
Harriet the wife also Children John,George,Joseph and
Albert
In 1841 it gives at 56
Virginia Row
(some renumbering in Virginia Row or replacement tenements?)
James Kilbey 40 Shoe Maker born
locally
Mary
45? Shoe Binder born locally
There were also Kilbeys at 4, 5, 6, 7 & 7B Virginia Row over the
years.
Also 9, 17, 22 & 23 Turk St
( from
Certificates? they seem to be elsewhere during Census years!)
- in fact looking at my records again
I have made a mildly interesting discovery:
Joshua Kilbey was born next door at 4 Virginia Row in 1843.
His parents
were Joshua Kilbey & Mary Ann Kirk (my GGGgrandparents, married
1843 in the Parish Church, Hackney her father was John Kirk
( had another look at the certificate & my John Kirk was
a pattern drawer.)
- do you
think she could be sister to the Elizabeth Kirk you list as
married
to Thomas Whiter in 1842?
(Father of Elizabeth was John Kirk Pattern drawer
witnesses George Whiter and Ann Brian(Brien) who subsequently married.
So we seem to have a link.) Now to explore that
set of people!
According to your online certificates their child Elizabeth
was born in 1847
at 4 Virginia Row-- I reckon she & Joshua werecousins.
Joshua & Mary Ann moved to 9 Turk St & were there at the 1861 census.
I can find the "departure" of James registered in 1867
March
Bethnal Green 1 c 229 no sign of Mary

No relation that I know of, but thanks.
Note: age is the lower of 5 year groups, where censustaker is not told exact age!
1841 Census 693-4 Virginia Row,bethnal Green
(Very cosy arrangements!)
But we seem to be short of Joshua Kilbey who marries Mary ann Kirk in
1843
Kilbey or Kilby seems to be confused at that time
since reading and writing was not common and the exact
spelling of names had not been fixed,Census takers seemed to write down what
they heard!
