"music made for pleasure, music made to thrill"

Kate-Wuthering Heights Kate - in concert This is only a small selection of links to other sites featuring the artist Kate Bush. Of the many sites out there in the Web I have chosen these five to give examples of; tribute site; un-maintained but still worthwhile site; the acknowledged prime fan site; a dedicated web-ring site; and a commercial promotional site.

I hope you enjoy these links and the rest of this website.

web site opening graphic Babooshka Webring Description: Fans have produced a diversity of sites exclusively dedicated to Kate Bush and like many others in this ring this site is explicitly motivated by personal experience and the emotive nature of music in an individual's life. It is also interesting in that it incorporates tribute to the artist and personal aspects of the life of the Webmistress, as she describes herself, together in one site. A web-ring is, in effect, a very similar entity to the web channel we are producing here, only the contributors are linked across multiple servers around the world and are bound by the commonality of their subject interest. I have been in contact with the originator of this web-ring, Banshee, who wishes us all well in our attempts.

Opinion:This is a fairly simple and small site which is easy to navigate, though has little of real content to recommend it other than an introduction to this web-ring and some insight into the life and character of its author. Content centering on the artist Kate Bush is very limited.

  • website's opening graphicView Kate's Songs Description: This is a tribute site which specilises in attempting to give the words to all of Kate's best known songs and also includes a collection of MIDI sequencer renderings of some of her finest tunes. These MIDI files are available for download if you like them. The owner of this site seems to be principally interested in the lyrics or poetry of Kate's music and in reproducing them for others to enjoy. It is unique in this list in that it is the only site which gives the option of a graphical or text only version.

Opinion: Again this site is fairly basic but is redeemed by its content. Many of us have at one time wished we could find the words to a particular song and the author of this site has tried to make Kate Bush songs accessible in this way. The icing on the cake is the collection of downloadable MIDI music. Though not to everyone's taste some of these do quite faithfully represent some of this artist's music. This site is worth a look if you want some song lyrics or are a MIDI sequencer fan.

  • opening site graphicKate Gallery Description: An example of a very promising site sadly left undeveloped for several years now (last update 1997) though still worth a visit. A nicely put together site with some very good content in terms of images not easily found elsewhere and some unique in that they have been captured from video footage of live performances. As a contrast to the previous site reviewed this focuses predominantly on the visual. It also has photographs taken from several angles of Kate's contribution to the Warchild charity - a bronze sculpture as a representation of the life of Billie Holiday.

Opinion: Though obviously authored by a confirmed fan it is not so sickly sycophantic as many tribute sites. Technically it feels a little "busy" as do many amateur frame-based sites. However, navigation is fairly simple and intuitive, whislt at the same time the author made efforts to add interest to his site in its design. A nice site which was very promising until abandoned, especially if you're looking for Kate pics.

  • opening screenshot Gaffaweb Description: To say this site is extensive would be quite an understatement. Again put together by advocates of Kate Bush's art, as it states in the first page, this is widely acknowledged to be the most comprehensive of all sites dedicated to her life and work. This site has grown and developed since August 1985. It first took the form of a mailing list called Love-Hounds which then grew into a usenet newsgroup called rec.music.gaffa. and from there to the Gaffaweb site itself, conceived, developed and maintained by a group of like-minded afficionados. It contains exhaustive history, quotes, discussion and literally hundreds of Kate Bush images. The navigation is simple and straightforward and the site obviously concentrates on content rather than flashy or eyecatching gimmicks. Its also good to see an extremely popular site which is not overburdened with advertising.

Opinion: If you are looking for flashy graphics and the latest gifs and gimmicks then this is not the site for you. If, however, you want to explore aspects of this artist's life and work there is absolutely no better place to be on the web. The content is almost exclusively text based except for the gallery section which holds quite literally hundreds of images of Kate Bush as a child, youth, adult and performer. If you are a fan then this site is unmissable.

  • album coverTower Records...Kate Bush...The Red Shoes Description: This link is different to those above in that it takes you to a specific page in a large site, and also in the fact that this is the only commercial site listed here. The company 'Tower Records' as the name suggests deals on-line in selling music related products. I chose this page particularly because it gives details about the only album released by Kate Bush in the 1990s. What is also special about this album is the guest artists who appear on it including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Prince, Nigel Kennedy and Lenny Henry of all people! Within the rest of this site can also be found pages on all of the albums released by Kate Bush accessed by the site's own search engine. The page reviewed gives all the information you could want about the specific album "The Red Shoes" and how to buy a copy online.

Opinion: This is a pretty good place to look if you want specific information about each album which also gives contemporaneous quotes from the music press. Keep your credit card safely locked away when you access this site!
