September
2001 saw the first Aberlour Orphanage Reunion.
The Tuesday saw the ex boy's and girls arriving at the King Robert Hotel in
Stirling Scotland.
The venue had graciously been arranged by the Aberlour Childcare
Trust.
Over 100 people came along. There were loads of hugs and stories from
their childhood days echoed around the lounge bar.
We met people who were in the orphanage from 1920 right up till it closed.
In the evening we had a buffet followed by Allan and myself plonking away on our
guitars and May singing Jambalaya before Bob grabbed the mic and took us all back
to our childhood day's with his renditions of songs that we all thought we had
forgot.
Oh, how the memories flowed.
The evening moved swiftly. To swiftly before we started to head towards
our welcoming beds.
It had been a long day, albeit full of comradeship.
On the Wednesday we had the local press come along to talk to us. Then we
had a group photograph taken for prosperity.
In the evening we had a sit down dinner after which we headed up stairs for a Traditional
Scottish dancing display, a lone piper and then a band for us to dance
to.
We had a great time treading on each others toes. Many of the men wore the
traditional kilt.
It was a really wonderful evening. Thankyou to the Aberlour Childcare
Trust for providing the entertainment.
Thursday was the BIG day.
We all traveled up to Aberlour for lunch at the High School before going to St Margaret's
Church for a wonderful service.
A couple of people were so over come that
they had to leave the church.
The Rev Ruth Tait did us proud.
We had the Bishop of Moray and the incredible Cannon Michael Wolfe, son of the
Dean Wolfe who ran the orphanage for so many years. His tale's as a
scallywag in the orphanage rekindled so many embers that had lain dormant for so
many years in the deep recesses of peoples minds.
Our deepest thanks to all
the people of Aberlour and surrounding areas for making this a truly memorable
day.
So, in the words
of Cannon Michael Wolfe
'We all remember the past while looking to the future'.
