The Nationalities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The Empire is an unlikely amalgum of nationalities with a total population of approximately forty-five million people. This population was made up of over a dozen ethnic groups.
In the Austro-Hungarian Empire in New Europa in 1872, there were approximately:
12 million Germans (largely Austrians)
10 million Hungarians
6.5 million Czechs
2 million Slovaks
5 million Poles
4 million Ruthenes
3 million Croats
0.5 million Serbs (later over 2 million)
2.9 million Roumanians
1.4 million Slovenes
1.9 million Italians
0.5 million Islamic Slavs
0.5 million Others
Not unsurprisingly, given human nature, there were many areas of friction between these groups on ethnic abd religous grounds. That said, the immense Imerial and Royal bureacracy seems to have managed to keep this under control most of the time.
Those who chose to take up service in "the Emperor's many coloured coats" (refering to the different branches of the army, navy, diplomats and bureaucrats) were expected to give up the nationality they were born into and take on a new identity that of the Habsburg Empire.
The latest addition to the armed forces of the Empire is the Imperial and Royal Airfleet
