BRIEF HISTORY:

1983  April Oxfordshire Club formed as a Centre of the VWOC(GB)

1985   'Charles Owen Shield' was awarded to Neil Birkitt for his Beetle in the concourse at a show in Newbury. Neil has become editor of VW Driver.
1992 July   The combined Oxfordshire/Wiltshire team won the BVF 1992 Engine Build Competition in a time of 24 minutes 15 secs.   That is the time taken to build the engine from component parts, then it has to run for 5 minutes. Takes me 20 minutes to find a 13mm socket. The team was Les Sandell, Bill Beavis & Tony Vaughan.
1992 Wiltshire VWOC(GB) was formed from Oxfordshire members who lived in Wiltshire.
1994  The Charles Owen Shield is awarded after a 9 year gap. The winner was S, Nicholls with his Split Screen Camper. The Charlie Owen Shield is now awarded annually to the best VW in the Club.
1995 - March  The Oxfordshire Centre leaves the VWOC(GB) following a heated AGM over subscriptions and  Centre Newsletters etc.
1995    Oxfordshire VWOC joins the Association of British VW Clubs (ABVWC)
1999 Oxfordshire VWOC makes it's first tentative steps on to the internet. WiltshireVWOC joins with Oxfordshire VWOC.
2000   The year starts off badly with the passing of Charlie Owen and Maj. Hirst.
2001 Club trip to Spa-Francorchamps was the main of the year.
2002 Club member Tony Isley wins Best of Show at Stonor Park
2005 Graham  resigns after over 10 years serving as Chairman. Peter takes over the reins.
2007 Following the AGM the club enters a more relaxed format with no Chairman, and the committee consists of the members who meet on the clubnight. Key posts do remain ie Treasurer, Membershp Sec. because the club will not function without them.

Club Champion for 2007...Kev and his superb 1303S Beetle............

Kev has been a long standing member of our club and is a regular supporter of our club activities, turning up even though he probably has the furthest to come. So it was a pleasure to see all his hard work on his 1303S come to fruition with the winning of the Charlie Owen Shield.

The Charlie Owen Shield dates back to the 1980's when it was first won by Neil Birkitt the VWDriver magazine editor and former editor of VWM and BUGPOWER. It disappeared for 10 years before re-surfacing in time for our club concourse competition. It has been rewarded every year since.

Charlie Owen was the Oxfordshire VW Guru. VW enthusiasts visited from all over the UK to his Besselsleigh home for guidance and spare parts. He would go to extra-ordinary lengths to help VW people in his day. He often re-countered a phonecall received in the middle of the night from a local Horse Race Jockey who was stuck on the Downs in his Camper. On arrival at the scene in his 1500 Beetle he realised the Campers' engine diagnosis was that it was terminal. So out on the Downs in the dark they set about taking the engine out of the Beetle and putting it in the Camper. Then driving the Camper back home to off load the damaged engine, leaving the Beetle on the Downs. During the day Charlie fixed the Camper engine and when the Jockey returned later in the day they swapped the engine, drove onto the 1500 Beetle and put the Beetle engine back in to eventually drive back home.

This is just one of the stories of Charlie, from a past age. The Charlie Owen Shield was donated to the club and Charlie was very proud to hear the first winner of the Shield for 10 years, comment on his appreciation of winning the Shield.

Charlie passed away in the year 2000, but his memory lives on.......

**  4-Star Petrol (Leaded) in and around Oxfordshire (2007)

Reports in Feb 07 concerning the silicon contamination, has revealed the Supermarket Petrol is not the same as provided by the main Petrol Stations such as Shell BP etc.... Which might explain why I seem to get more MPG from the BP garage than the Tesco stuff...who knows. The other concern is that the Supermarket messes up and we pay for it with increased prices. Do you think the Supermarkets won't be compensated by their supplier...they never loose :(
