PARTISAN (BRITAIN)

'PARTISAN' was founded in 1985 by communists who had been recruited to the Communist movement through the journal 'Proletarian No. 1', the first major work of the group 'Proletarian' (now dissolved). This organisation had itself split from the 'NEW COMMUNIST PARTY' (NCP) in response to the denial by the leaders of the NCP of Lenin's view that it was necessary to establish a revolutionary paper for, and aimed at the level of, the advanced workers. This view is based on the theory that within the working class there are different levels of political class consciousness, and includes the understanding that one of the features of opportunism is the striving to adapt Marxism to the ideological backwardness of the lower levels of consciousness.

The reason for forming Partisan was that this was clearly an undertaking which could not and cannot be achieved by opportunist methods. In addition to this, while Proletarian upheld Lenin's views about the need for a revolutionary paper at the level of the advanced stratum of workers, it nonetheless failed to break from revisionism.

In 1991 members of 'PARTISAN'joined the STALIN SOCIETY, a move which strengthened the organisation's understanding of the nature of modern revisionism and the need for organised struggle against it.

In 1998 'PARTISAN' took a leading role in the foundation of the 'NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR MARXIST-LENINIST UNITY', with TONY CLARK of 'PARTISAN' becoming Secretary, and JOHN GREEN of 'PARTISAN' Chairman and (in 1999) Editor of the Committee's journal, the International Marxist-Leninist Review. This organisation (originally the 'Committee for the M-L Party') stands for Communist unity and has founded the National Campaign for Marxist-Leninist Unity, a campaign that invites all Communists to form a joint body to overcome the sectarian deviation that characterizes the Communist movement at the present time.

Partisan argues that, for those who reject the reformist or left-reformist movement, a joint committee of Marxist-Leninists is the only non-sectarian path, and is one that can lead eventually to the formation of a single, Marxist-Leninist party.
