The Constituency of Surrey Heath forms part of the giant South East region European Constituency.

The South East region comprises:
Berkshire
Buckinghamshire
Hampshire
Isle of Wight
Kent
Oxfordshire
Surrey
Sussex

This new Constituency was created by the Government prior to the 1999 Euro elections.  This broke the link between the MEPs and their constituents and introduced a form of proportional representation, PR.  This PR has meant a number of fringe and extreme party candidates have been elected at the expense of the main parties.

In the 1999 elections, despite the new voting system, the Conservatives won more seats than anyone was expecting.  This was put down to the clear message that only the Conservatives would fight for Britain to be in Europe but not run by Europe.  We are also the only major party that is committed to keeping the pound.

There are 11 Members of the European Parliament representing the South East region. (5 Conservative, 2 Labour, 2 Liberal Democrat, 1 Green, 1 UKIP.)

The 5 Conservative MEPs are:

JAMES PROVAN
ROY PERRY
DANIEL HANNAN
JAMES ELLES
NIRJ DEVA
