C02 Chaplain

Camp Duties > CO Department

CHAPLAIN

1. APPOINTMENT
a) The Convenor has a short list of Chaplains who may be contacted anytime up to 3 years in advance of future camps in order to ascertain availability.
b) Some previous Chaplains on the Convenor's list may have expressed a wish to be considered as Chaplain for a particular year and this will be taken into account.
c) The Convenor will provide all new Chaplains with an "application form" detailing the requirements for the position. Those Chaplains on the list will not need to complete an application form if their positions within their Church governing body do not change.
d) Lay Preachers and serving BB/GB Officers within Participating Companies may be considered for the appointment by the Convenor who will rely on personal recommendation from those Company Captains for their suitability.
e) All Chaplains should be familiar with and sympathetic to the Object of The Boys' Brigade, The Girls' Brigade and that of Stedfast Camp.
f) Upon successful acceptance, the appointment will made by the Camp Convenor, as soon as possible following the AGM (between Oct and Dec), who will write in confirmation.

2. PLANNING
a) There is an element of preparation and planning that will involve contacting the Church selected for Sunday Church Parade and the Chaplain is to advise the Convenor and "CO elect" of progress made.
b) The Chaplain will prepare the content, leading the Camp and Staff in worship that will involve song, participation and praise.
c) The Chaplain will plan and deliver a spiritual "theme" for the week's camp so that all Campers will share and worship together, liaising with Company Captains, the Camp CO and reporting to the Convenor.
d) There will be an element of communicating with the local Church Minister should Stedfast Camp be asked to contribute to the service in any way.
e) There is usually a traditional camp drumhead service on the Sunday evening and the Chaplain will need to prepare a form of worship and song that will involve the whole of Stedfast Camp, drawing upon Companies where possible to contribute to the service.
e) Stedfast Camp enjoys singing traditional and modern hymns and songs of praise. The Chaplain should consult Company Captains prior to Camp in order to identify musicians and "favourite hymns" for incorporation into the week's worship. The CO-elect and Convenor will provide assistance as needed.
 f) The Chaplain will inform the Convenor of any potential problems or difficulties with a view to resolve them.

2. DUTIES
a) Responsibility for the general spiritual well being of Camp.
b) To provide spiritual leadership for morning and evening worship for campers and camp staff.
c) To lead Staff Prayers in the morning before reveille and at other times as appropriate.
d) To be responsible for the Rest Squad (if any) or Rest Time at Camp.

3. PRAYER TENT
a) A "Prayer Tent" was introduced in Camp 2008 by Dr Iain Ballard. This was found to be of great value for private prayer, worship and a "sacred place" for all campers to use.
b) Although it is not prescribed, it was suggested [at the 2008 AGM] that the Prayer Tent may again be of value in further camps. This is, of course, at the discretion of the Chaplain and depends on the availability of the canvas.
c) Arrangements to provide canvas and furnishing, should a Prayer Tent be chosen, should be made via the Equipment Officer and the CO.

4. CAMP COMMUNION
a) As Stedfast Camp is ecumenical, there is no preferred administration of the holy sacrament. It is a matter of preference for the Chaplain or a guest minister as to how this act of faith should be followed.
b) The Chaplain is to discuss how Communion is conducted with the Convenor, who will either agree with the proposal or, if in doubt, will seek advice from Company Captains in conjunction with the CO-elect.
c) Upon achieving a satisfactory form of Communion, the Chaplain will prepare and lead the Camp in Holy Communion on Friday night after the Camp Supper or agree suitable alternative arrangements.
d) The Chaplain will consult the Convenor if there are any potential problems or difficulties.
e) Stedfast Camp will provide a portable Communion set from the Quartermaster Store.
5. EXPENSES & CAMP COSTS
a) Although this position does not attract an honorarium, Stedfast Camp will pay the Camp Costs per capita (excluding transport) of the Chaplain and his/ her immediate family.
b) Stedfast Camp will meet the cost of pulpit supplies on production of receipts/ invoices, noting that it may be necessary to produce hymn or song sheets particular to Stedfast Camp.

The Chaplain is accountable to:
a) The Camp Convenor during the planning and preparation stages leading up to Camp.
b) The Camp CO whilst at Camp.
