WASHING UP
(Quartermaster Department)

1.
WASHING UP SUPERVISOR
a) This duty is under the auspices of the Quartermaster who may appoint a QM Assistant to this particular role.
b) The role involves strict supervision of the Washing Up Squad.

2.
SAFETY - HOT WATER HANDLING
a) the Supervisor will ensure that no camper will handle boiling hot water or hot implements.
b) hot water is to be drawn from the cookhouse by ADULT staff by permission of the Quartermaster or Cook.
c) bowls and baths are not to be over-filled.
c) spillage is to be dealt with immediately and duck boards or straw is to be laid over soggy turf or soil by arrangement with the Equipment or Safety Officer.

3.
WASHING UP SQUAD DUTIES
a) One QM Assistant or the Washing Up Supervisor will supervise and mark the performance of the WASHING UP SQUAD.
b) The duties of the Supervisor is described as:
1. to fill or supervise filling of washing-up bowls or baths
2. to top up washing-up bowls with hot water obtained from the Cookhouse
3. to assign three bowls per station and will add:
a. to add detergent for pre-wash and wash
b. to add a mild diluted measure of Milton (or equivalent) for the rinse bowl.
c) to direct the Washing Up Squad to:
1. ensure that Washing shall follow this sequence:
a. Pre-wash (no visible food on the item when it leaves this bowl)
b. Wash
c. Rinse (to sterilise item)
d. Drain (items are to be stacked and full draining trays are to be taken into the mess tent if raining or left outside if dry.)
d) to supervise the safe emptying of bowls or baths in accordance with camp site instructions as directed by the QM.
e) to direct the squad onto other washing and cleaning details regarding quarter-mastering
f) to apply Health & Safety at all times, noting that:
1. Each Squad Member wears an apron.
2. Protective gloves are issued as needed.
3. The squad should behave correctly at all time, avoiding accidents
4. Squad members are not allowed to handle boiling water, detergent and sterilising solutions.
5. Any accident is to be reported to the First Aid Officer and the Safety Officer.
6. All accidents are recorded in the Stedfast Camp Accident Book.
7. Anyone requiring first aid should be taken to the First Aid Tent and the MO should be called.
8. Sharp Knives and heavy or dangerous equipment shall not be handled by children.
9. Disruptive or poorly behaved Duty Squad members are to be dismissed
g) will dismiss the squad when the work has been completed, recording their assessment marks.
h) will return cleaning materials to store, drying cloths to be washed and washing implements to be cleaned and returned to QM.

The Quartermaster Assistant is to supervise and mark on the performance of the WASHING-UP SQUAD.

The Quartermaster Assistants are accountable to the Quartermaster and Cook.
