Note: The Equipment Officer and Safety Officer may be separate or combined jobs.
Note: The Fire Alarm (in the event of a fire) can be sounded by any member of staff or camper. Emergency Services will be called if needed and the CO will need to complete and Accident/ Incident Report Form as necessary.
The Boys' Brigade Safety Handbook is a useful mandated publication to read.
The completion of the YLT Health & Safety Module is required, although H&S practical experience would be useful for this job.
Risk Assessment Forms are available to download from the BBUK web site.
Accident/ Incident Report forms are also available online from the BBUK web site.
It is suggested that a quantity of these are available at Camp.
The Equipment and/ or Safety Officer will, on the first Saturday of Camp, provide:
and will ensure that
and will take the following preventative measures by
and will follow
a) Site Security guidelines (shown below) and Health & Safety best practise for Stedfast Camp.
b) Instructions as may be received from the local Police.
c) Incident and Injury Reporting procedures with the CO and MO and will review all incident reports.
and will advise
a) the CO, Adjutants, Programme Team Leader of any possible Safety Risk concerning activities
b) the CO of any staff involved in Contact Sports or behaviour likely to cause a Health & Safety incident.
c) the Transport Officer as necessary.
d) the Medical Officer as may be necessary or appropriate (e.g. to "stand-by" for contact sports).
Site Security Guidelines for Duties (best practice)
a) The Equipment (or Safety) Officer will work closely with the CO and other Officers, as directed by the CO, to ensure that the security of the camp site is maintained and that any impact through breaches in security (e.g. unwelcome visitors, or campers wandering from their tents after Retreat) does not compromise Camp Safety.
b) The CO will ask the Equipment (and/or Safety) Officer on the first Saturday, to assist in formulating a plan that will draw on Officer resources for a period (determined by the CO and Adjutants) that will ensure the safety and security of the site, who will keep watch on the site entrances, the lines of tents, cookhouse, quartermaster's tent, canteen tent and the main marquee, reporting back to the CO or delegated Officer when breaches are detected.
c) If necessary, the CO will call upon the local Police Force for assistance or may use minimum force if required to ensure the removal of unwelcome people onto the site.
The Safety Officer is also an Equipment Officer Assistant and will act as directed by the Equipment Officer to whom he/she is accountable.
The Equipment Officer is to supervise and will mark the performance of the EQUIPMENT SQUAD.
The Equipment/ Safety Officer is accountable to:
a) The Quartermaster for Canvas and Equipment care, repair, replacement and return of items to QM Store.
b) The Commanding Officer (CO) and the Duty Officer.
c) The CO for Site Security.
