Charles Percival WICKENDEN, Acting Corporal, HMS Devonshire, buried 4th September 1929, aged 29 years. On 26th July 1929 the Cruiser was taking part in live firing exercise off the Greek coast in company with three other Cruisers, HMS London, HMS Sussex and HMS Frobisher. At 10.00 a.m. HMS Devonshire commenced firing. The two guns in ‘X’ Turret fired simultaneously, the right-hand gun fired correctly but unknown to the gun crew the left-hand gun mis-fired. The cordite propellant failed to ignite correctly, and the round did not leave the barrel. The well trained gun crew unaware that the round had not fired normally opened the breech ready for the next round. The sudden rush of air into the breech was sufficient to fully ignite the cordite which exploded back into the gun turret. This ignited the propellant sacks waiting to fire the second round of both guns, so causing a terrific explosion, which blew off the turret’s 1" armour plated roof.
As a result of this accident sixteen members of the Royal Marines, and one Royal Navy man, were killed outright or died of their wounds shortly after. Sergeant Snell R.M., was missing and it is believed that he was thrown into the sea by the force of the explosion and drowned, since his body was never recovered.
