VILLAGE OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR HETHERSETT

HETHERSETT was named Norfolk Village of the Year for 2001 in the annual competition organised by Norfolk County Council and sponsored by the Eastern Daily Press newspaper.

The competition recognises towns and villages, big and small, which are working to make life better for every member of the community. Hethersett was victorious in the category for villages with over 900 people.

It was a proud moment for the community on September 5th when Eastern Daily Press editor Peter Franzen unveiled a plaque close to the village sign (this is pictured opposite).

He also presented a cheque for  £100 to parish council chairman George Beckwith. Mr Beckwith said: "I am very pleased. We were surprised to win the title as we are not the most picturesque village, we don't have a village green and things like that.

"But we do have a lot of people in the community who work behind the scenes and something like 60 different organisations. I am very proud and privileged to receive this award for all those hundreds of people in Hethersett."

Peter Franzen said: "It's always nice to give prizes and much more so when the recipients have worked so hard. Your hard work makes Norfolk a better place."

Hethersett was also named as reserve for the Norfolk nomination for the National Village of the Year award. The county's nomination for this was Blakeney who won the village of the year category for populations under 900.

To win their award, Hethersett beat off competition from Pulham Market, Hingham, Upwell, Wroxham and Hickling.
