FOLKESTONE RFC

Fillies Match Report

     Worthing 0 Fillies 70

With very few girls’ teams in Kent Folkestone Fillies are being forced to travel further a field to seek opposition. So with bag in hand and willing parents/taxi drivers the girls set off for Worthing last weekend with an expanding squad of 19 players.

With Worthing being an unknown quantity Fillies started with their more experienced players. It was agreed to play three 20 minute periods to enable all of the girls to play.

Worthing kicked off deep into Folkestone’s half and the ball was secured by the forwards. From the ensuing ruck the ball was sent out to the backs who ran at the home team and were rewarded with a penalty for offside. Hayley Morgan took the crash ball and formed a ruck where the ball was collected by Atkins and passed quickly out to Parker and then Howland who popped it inside to full back Digby to score under the posts. She converted her try to make it 7-0 to the visitors.

Worthing kicked off and Daw secured the ball and passed out to Martin who made good yardage down the wing. Worthing put in a good strong tackle but Martin recycled to Morgan then Howland and on to Kerri Morgan. The younger Morgan, (who was celebrating her 13th birthday) made a fantastic run handing off the opposition before off loading to West. West powered up the wing breaking two tackles to score in the corner. Digby converted (Jonny Wilkinson look out) to make it 14-0. A third try was soon added by Digby who pounced on a Worthing mistake to score in the corner. The Fillies next try by Hayley Morgan was disallowed; Morgan having crossed the try line in the corner and made her way under the posts, but was ruled to have her foot in touch.

Worthing restarted with a 22 drop out and secured their own ball and made their way into Fillies territory. Good tackling by Parker brought the move to a halt. The ball was turned over by Folkestone and Parker scored under the posts. Digby added two with the conversion.  It really was one way traffic but all credit to Worthing for not giving in. The next try was added by Hayley Morgan in a well worked move involving Howland and Digby, releasing Morgan to score under the posts. Digby converted.

The start of the second period saw new girls Eve Davies, Lydia Stevenson, Alice Smalley, Samantha James and Gracie Irvine take the field. The Fillies kicked off but with strong physical tackling by Paice and Howland the girls soon turned the ball over. West soon added to the score with her second try which was converted by Eve Davies. Worthing kicked off still determined to make a game of it, the ball was taken by Daw and out to Davies on to Howland then Hayley Morgan to crash over for an unconverted try bringing the score to 45-0. The Fillies hooker Emma Paice took a Worthing scrum against the head, scrum half Parker popped the ball to Howland who went over to score. Howland also scored the next try after good work from Davies, James, Stevenson, Irvine and Smalley. Three further tries were scored in the third period the first set up by Stevenson out to Digby and on to Hannah Batt who crashed over. Hayley Morgan added the second having been supplied by Batt. However the best try was saved for last with scrum half Rose Atkins leaving the home team dead in her tracks; she was supported by winger and birthday girl Kerri Morgan who received a sweet inside pass to score her first try. Although the final score was a resounding win for the Fillies the Worthing girls battled to the end and refused to stop the game early due to the large score line.

Congratulations to Abi Howland, Hannah Daw, Hayley Morgan, Sammy Parker, Emma Paice and Rose Atkins all who have all been selected to represent South East Region in forthcoming matches.

Happy Birthday Kerri
