I have to admit I had no idea the job of Head Coach Folkestone RFC would take so much time. It’s really tough but I wouldn’t swop it for any other post. I’m learning something every day and every day brings something new for me to think about. We have so many different personalities and characters at the club that it’s difficult for me to motivate everybody but believe me I’m trying.

 

That’s why it’s been good in recent weeks to see the best of the club in the young and the old. I’ll start with the old –sorry Joe. But Joe Wilson joined us looking for social rugby. He has been playing for the 3rd XV and the 4th XV but when we were forced to play two 1st XV games in two days he volunteered his services in the front row against Ashford in the Kent Plate quarter final. He was on the bench but an early injury meant he was on the pitch before the end of the first half. He was terrific and gave 100%. Thanks Joe. But life can be cruel and just a week later joe was terribly injured in a match against Dover. He had a clean dislocation of the ankle, a fracture of the tibia and broke his fibia. He now has 7 screws, a bolt and a plate inside his leg. I know though that he will be back on the pitch giving everything as soon as he can.

 

Now moving on to the youngsters. I am really glad to see some of the club’s juniors joining us at senior training. On February 16 we gave some of their senior debut. Well done to Toby Gibbs, Ollie Forbes, James Taylor and Jack Cox who are all in the Under 17 squad. These boys and their mates will be fighting for 1st XV places in the coming seasons.

 

The 1st XV is in the relegation dogfight. We have one league game left, to Charlton Park away on April 12. I know we have the players to win all our games but unfortunately we do suffer from players being unavailable. So we need YOUR support. It’s the last game so let’s have a party.

 

Everybody at our club has his or her opinion on how we should move forward but please let’s get together to support the lads who are out on the pitch. They give 100%. Twice this season we have been reduced to just 13 players on the pitch and the fighting spirit and commitment shown by the players is amazing. I could not ask for more. I’ll support these players totally and I need you to do likewise.

In my mind we are coming to the end of the first season of a three season campaign to get this club up where we belong which to my mind is London 3 SE at least. Any higher than that would need us to look at finances closely.

 

It’s good to see the clubhouse and new pitches begin to come online. The new clubhouse is going to be fantastic and I am hopeful that all the “rugby widows” and their families will want to come along to the club on match day. If they don’t fancy watching the boys batter Hell out of each other they can sit back on the leather sofas, enjoy a coffee or two and watch TV or chat to their friends. Believe me you are all going to want to come to the club for a drink and hang out soon. How many clubs in Kent do you know have 4 pitches, 2 of them floodlit, 8 changing rooms and a superb clubhouse with a viewing terrace? I know the project is behind schedule but it’s almost ready. Be patient.
