RECORDINGS

As part of our 10th Anniversary Celebrations in 1992, the choir made their first recording entitled "Voices in Celebration". If any one would like a copy of our tape, then just email me and I'll get it sent to you. It costs £10 (incl p&p) in UK. If you live outside the UK, then we will normally send it to you free, as long as you donate the equivalent (+post & packing) to a local charity of your choice.

Our first CD was released at the end of 2001. This celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2002. We've already sold a thousand copies of the CD. It contains a number of non-traditional choral songs

Our second CD was released December 2002.

Third CD May 2006 and 4th (Xmas CD) December 2006

HISTORY

The Ogmore Valley , which is found in the heart of the South Wales valleys, has had a proud history in being a provider of musical entertainment over the past one hundred years. However, with the decline of the mining industry, came a decline in the choral activities of the area. In 1982, a number of friends who had an interest in male voice choir music, decided it was time for the valley to be placed back on the map of Welsh Choral Music. Under the guidance of the late Glyn Stephens as musical director, and Jean Davies as accompanist, they set about building up the choir's membership and repertoire. The choir has developed over the years with 2007 being its twenty fifth birthday.

WEDDINGS

The choir is well known in the Bridgend and South Wales (and Lincolnshire & Petersfield!) area for providing a special wedding performance. The choir will perform five or six songs for the guests prior to the bride's arrival, and then normally three songs whilst the signing of the register takes place. This has provided the choir with much praise, and has often been the first taste of Welsh Choral music for non-Welsh guests (recently we sang at a wedding where the groom's family were all from Canada).

We normally charge £275-£300 plus transport. If anyone is interested then please contact me.

We have sung at weddings as far a field as Lincolnshire, we've been told that the pub is still trying to re-stock!!!

Some of the songs that we often perform at the weddings are:

Gwahoddiad, Myfanwy, Unchained Melody, The Rose, Cwm Rhondda , Calon Lan, She, Trabodau, Elen Fwyn, You Raise Me Up, Hallelujah ..... (we do many other songs both English and Welsh)

PRESENT

To the present day, the choir has maintained a membership of between 30-40 members. The choir is in great demand, and we are proud over the years to have helped to raise considerable amounts for both local and national charitable organisations. The choir is supported by an efficient administrative committee and an enthusiastic ladies section. The choir has formed bonds of friendship with many other choirs both in Wales and England. We are open to offers to sing anywhere, as long as you can guarantee an audience for us. If you can cover the cost of our transport, we will normally sing for nothing if it is for a worthy cause. We are a very sociable choir, and our singing post-concerts is often as memorable as the concert itself.

PAST CONCERTS

We have performed at many prestigious venues, including The Royal Albert Hall (as a member of the South Wales Association of Male Voice Choirs), St David's Hall Cardiff, the Savoy Hotel London, St Pierre Golf Club, Afan Lido Port Talbot, Tewkesbury Abbey, RC Cathedral Shrewsbury, Cardiff Castle, Celtic Manor Hotel, Songs of Praise at the Millenium Stadium, Marylake Shrine Kitchener (Toronto), National Museum of Wales, with The World Choir at the Arms Park in 1992, St Mary’s Chipping Camden, Church in Toorrevieja, Simione Lake Garda.

We sang at the opening of the Welsh Open Golf Championship at the Celtic Manor. We're looking forward to singing at the opening of the Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor (if anyone wants to book us!!!)

FILMS

The choir took part in the filming of a feature film in the summer of 1999. It was released May 2001.

It is entitled "Very Annie Mary". The stars include Rachel Griffiths (Oscar nominee, Six Feet Under, ), Ruth Madoc (Hi De Hi), Jonathan Pryce (Bond films etc), Kenneth Griffiths (loads of films), Matthew Rhys (Graduate), Ioan Gruffydd (Titanic, Hornblower,Dalmations, etc), Ray Gravell (rugby for Wales) and of course US.

It was filmed in the Garw Valley (renamed OGW), and was directed by Sara Sugarman.

The starting titles show our valley looking down from the Bwlch mountain

We opened the premiere of the film in Cardiff, May 20th 2001. The premiere was followed by a reception where again we sang (slightly more informally) and made the DJ give up!!

TOURS

We have embarked on a number of successful tours to West Germany 1988, Scotland 1990, Belgium and Holland 1993, and in 1995 a most enjoyable tour to Torquay with a very successful concert at the Central Methodist Church.

We visited  Toronto Canada (May, 2002). It was without doubt one of the best trips we have ever undertaken. The welcome and the concerts were outstanding. We were able assisted by our soloist, Catrin Eleri Jenkin. We are looking forward to renewing our friendships in the future with the North York and Waterloo Police choirs. Their hospitality was second to none.

2004

Sorrento

An outstanding success. Sang in Sorrento and received a standing ovation. The venue was outstanding, and the choir performance was described as “the best choir ever heard in Sorrento”. The social aspects of the tour were brilliant. Again accompanied by Catrin, her performance with the choir was superb. We visited Capri, Pompei, Amalfi coast, Rome, and Vessuvious.  Photos will be included in the gallery section soon.

CONCERT HALL

The Canolfan Bethlehem Centre was the old Bethlehem chapel, which has been converted over the last few years into a wonderful auditorium and base for the Ogmore Valley Choir. This development has only been made possible due to the grants provided by the Arts Council of Wales( Lottery Unit), Foundation for Sport and Arts, and the Local Authority. In addition to this, the choir and its associates have worked endlessly in fund raising, and without the help and generosity of the community and surrounding area it could never have become a reality. This venue is an achievement the choir is justly proud of and are looking forward to using for the next hundred years.

The choir has also refurbished a Steinway piano, and this now takes centre place in Canolfan Bethlehem. (see gallery)

MUSICAL DIRECTORS

In 1987, a new musical director was required due to Mr Glyn Stephens having to retire through ill health, and the choir was very lucky to secure the services of Mr Peter Jones. With Peter's expertise in arranging and conducting, the choir has evolved into one of the most popular in the area. It is due to Peter that the choir now possess such a wide ranging repertoire which is the envy of many other choirs, ranging from the traditional Welsh choral pieces to the more modern pieces with guitar accompaniment. Unfortunately, due to ill health, Peter had to leave the choir. This left a void, which was temporarily filled initially by the renowned musical director and conductor Mr Alun John. Subsequently, the choir has been lucky enough to acquire the services of Mr Malcolm Burnell, a conductor with a fine background and pedigree. From the time of the choir's formation, Mrs Jean Davies was a faithful and loyal servant to the choir as its accompanist and without her efforts it is doubtful whether the choir could have succeeded and evolved to its current level of success.

Jean has recently retired from playing due to arthritic hands, but we are now very fortunate to have both Eira Paskin and Debra Lewis as our accompanists.

Sadly, in January '99, the choir was shocked by the sudden death of Peter Jones from a heart attack. He will always be remembered by many of us in the choir, not just as a great musician, but also as a good friend.

During the years that the choir has been in existence, our compere has been Vaughn Evans. Sadly Vaughn passed away the beginning of 2002. He will always be remembered with great affection by both choristers and people of the Ogmore Valley.

Sadly our great servant Jean Davies passed away end of 2004. She was a driving force behind the choir for many years. She was not slow in coming forward with advice (you’re not singing properly!!). It is difficult to remember her without smiling, and it is this memory that represents the icon she was within our choir.

The Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir recognizes that they are very lucky to possess such a committed and talented music team. With Eira, Catrin and Deb ‘in charge’ then the choir continues to develop both in the quality and range of music they produce.

Eira Paskin

Eira has been involved in music all of her life and has been involved in numerous choirs over the years. She began her association with the Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir in 1996, when she acted as deputy accompanist to the choir’s original accompanist Jean Davies. After a few years Jean retired and Eira took over as the choir’s accompanist working firstly under the musical directorship of Peter Jones and then Malcolm Burnell. When in 2002 Malcolm retired, Eira took over the responsibility of being the musical director and has continued in developing the repertoire and quality of the choir. In her words she ‘thoroughly enjoys rehearsals and concerts’, with her enthusiasm and commitment rubbing off on the members of the choir. This enthusiasm for producing a varied repertoire for the choir continues and she has arranged numerous pieces ranging from classical, standard and popular songs.
Eira is still very busy both professionally and personally in still teaching English in schools and also in her ‘spare time’ looking after her grandchildren and dogs.

Catrin Eleri Jenkin

Catrin has been associated with the Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir since her first appearance at their Annual Concert in 2000. This was shortly after her success in winning at the Miner’s Eisteddfod that year. She has performed with the choir on numerous occasions both nationally and internationally. Her quality of voice and varied repertoire has enhanced the choir’s performances not only in concerts but also on all four of the CD’s produced by the choir. In 2002 she competed at the National Eisteddfod in St David’s and came second in a highly competitive field of singers (many of whom have now attained national and international recognition). Her children have followed in her tradition by competing and winning at the Urdd National Eisteddfod in recent years.
The choir is very fortunate in having Catrin in that she is also an accomplished musician and acts as the choir’s joint accompanist with Deb.

Deb Lewis

Deb gained an A.L.C.M. (Associate of London College of Music) in pianoforte and before moving to the area in the past was deputy accompanist for Carmarthen Male Voice Choir. After graduating with a BA in Music and Education, Deb taught infant children for 11 years in the area before becoming a full-time Mum (now with two young children). Deb has been associated with the Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir since 1999 when she acted as deputy accompanist to both Jean and Eira. In the subsequent years Deb with her enthusiasm and good humour has become one of the mainstays of the choir and now acts as joint accompanist with Catrin.
