City Pastors Prayer Breakfast Report - Wednesday 21 February 2007

M&M: Welcoming and Listening

Present: Carol Bailey, Dennis Bakka, Claudio Coquet, Amy Fry, Keith Howarth, Paul Larcombe, Chris Moreton, Russ Parkes, Lars Pettersen, Graham Timson, Sharon Walker, David Weeks, David Whitlock, Pauline Wills.

At first it looked as if there was to be a strict observance of Lent with very few cooked breakfasts ordered. However, the boys didn't let us down and numbers were restored by the time breakfast arrived.

Paul reminded everyone that the Prayer Breakfast reports are now available on a website, which means that there is also a facility to make comments. The planning meetings for Hope 2008 in Peterborough started in January and these reports are also available on the website.

Lars led the prayer and also dispelled any remaining observance of Lent by passing round a packet of chocolate M&M's. However, there was method in the madness and it soon became apparent that the reading was going to be from Luke 10:38-42 Martha and Mary:

[Lk 10:38] 'As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. [39] She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. [40] But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” [41] “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, [42] but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” '

Lars pointed out:
• Martha welcomed Jesus and opened her home to him - we need to welcome Jesus
• Mary sat at His feet, listening - we need to listen to the Lord if we want to be more effective
• Question: Are we doing the one thing, or the many?

Lars then led us to "simply worship" - no petitions or requests. This resulted in worship using songs and thanksgiving. A Scripture that emerged was Ephesians 1 'Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.' The prayer time concluded with people praying for one another and a final, rousing chorus of 'O come let us adore him!'

Thanks to Lars for leading this prayer-time, which was uplifting and encouraging. No-one knows where the M&M's went, but we suspect that Lars has not given up chocolate for Lent!

Future meeting dates:

Wednesday 14 November
Wednesday 28 November
Wednesday 12 December

These are all at the Peterborough Salvation Army in Bourges Boulevard, New England.
