Peterborough Hope 2008 Planning Meeting - 22 March 2007Meeting at Peterborough Community Church Thursday 22 March 2007 Present: Chair Dave Smith (PCC), Carol Bailey (Salvation Army), Jonathan Baker (Peterborough Cathedral), Simon Campling (CROPS), Paul Larcombe (St Paul’s Church) Chris Moreton (Southside Methodist Church), Graham Timson (Church on the Rock, Elim) David Whitlock (Bretton Baptist Church). Apologies from Teresa Brown (Shire & Soke, Ecumenical) and David Jennings (All Souls RC Church), and welcome to Simon Campling. The meeting started with prayer. Discussion & action: 1. 40 Days of Community – PCC and, possibly, the Salvation Army will be doing this in May/June. Dave Smith said that it feels like a natural tool for building. Dave felt that there was a danger of letting the months slip by and then waking up in the Autumn, even in January, and realising it’s been left too late. Now is the time, he felt, for mobilisation and motivation. 2. Invitations to the “Main 3” – Roy Crowne is available in September and willing to come to Peterborough. However, some have been wondering whether an earlier date is needed and whether Lawrence Singlehurst should be invited. Dave asked the team to consider what the aim of each invitation should be.
3. There was considerable discussion about the best schedule – two events or three events; how leadership teams are able to catch the vision; how working lay leaders can attend; how people who will influence others, can be empowered to start planning. 4. The following schedule was agreed: May Venue: Cathedral? 5. New Years Eve – Simon reported that in some other cities there are plans for a New Year event, which might take the form of prayer, a youth event, or praise with young people marching to a central place like the Cathedral. 6. Simon reported that he was in contact with people in the city about the HOPE 2008 needs. He was in discussions with The Besom, Christians Against Poverty, New Link, St Theresa’s and Community Centres. The primary question being asked is, “How can we serve?” 7. There followed a discussion about further contact with individuals and ministries. It was felt that there was a danger of not realising that ministry is already taking place with some churches. It was agreed that it is important to honour the existing ministry involvement. It was also agreed that the planning team needed to agree the contact strategy before any further contacts are pursued. There was agreement that it is important to speak with one voice, which is crucial to credibility and building bridges. Simon agreed to put further contacts on pause and it was agreed that no further contacts would be made and at the next meeting a sub-group would be formed to strategically decide how contact would be made for Peterborough Hope 2008; meanwhile research and information gathering would continue. The strategy will determine how individuals and groups will be approached. The next meeting would be dedicated to this. 8. The above discussion raised important points about the authority of this planning team in relation to the way the HOPE 2008 website allows people to sign up as Advocates. Presently there are three Advocates listed on the website – Simon Campling, Matt Wild and Teresa Brown. It was proposed that no decisions should be made outside of this planning team and that there should be one contact on the HOPE 2008 website, who would refer all enquiries to this group. Simon said he was willing to be the main HOPE 2008 advocate. All were asked to view the website to understand the role of the Advocates. No decision made until the next meeting. 9. Prayer Strategy – Paul Larcombe gave out a sheet entitled, Peterborough Hope 2008 – Proposed Prayer Strategy, which also had a list of the latest prayer pointers. Paul briefly introduced the strategy and it was agreed that all would read and comment at the next meeting. 10. Finances – Dave said that Teresa had agreed with Shire and Soke that £250 would be made available. It was felt that this could cover the costs for Lawrence Singlehurst’s visit. The next meeting will discuss how further funds can be secured. Jonathan advised that help in kind may be available from the Cathedral.
