Topic 7 - Pompeii and Herculaneum

 

The table below gives the title of each of the six pieces of coursework. You will be given much advice and help in preparing to write each piece. You should remember that coursework is part of the GCSE examination and is worth 20% of the final mark.

1.

An examination of the geographical position and features of the area. Maps to show transport links with the rest of Italy. Main occupations of the outlying communities.

2.

Imaginary instructions to the builder of a specific villa, e.g. Villa of the Papyri. Details of furnishings and decorations: plans.

3.

A slave’s account of his daily life, including household routine, visits to shops, forum, temple and baths.

4.

Master of house (c/w 2) discusses with visiting Roman the joys of the theatre. He reminisces about the amphitheatre and the riot which closed it.

Special edition newspaper. Account of eruption. Articles on previous volcanic activity; eye-witness accounts (based on Pliny’s letters). Obituaries.
