Hedgehog Safety:
There are many hazards that await an unwary Hedgehog, not least,of course, from cars!

Chemicals:
Hedgehogs can suffer when chemicals are used as pest-control in the garden. If a hedgehog eats slugs or snails that have themselves eaten slug-pellets,the build-up of poisons in the body can kill them. Hedgehogs are a far more effective, natural way of controlling pests, and are a beautiful visitor to any wildlife garden. Garden machinery:
Many Hedgehogs are injured by garden machinery. They have a habit of resting up in long grass or undergrowth, and can be overlooked by the gardener, often with fatal results. Please check the area to be mown or cleared very carefully for sleeping or resting hedgehogs. It may just save a life!

Water:
Hedgehogs are surprisingly good swimmers, getting into difficulty only if they cannot climb out of the water. If you are building a pond, make the sides gently shelving,so that wildlife can come to drink in safety,or trail a log or plank into the water,so that any animals falling in may be able to clamber out again.
Persecution:
It is a sad fact that Hedgehogs are not loved by everyone.Gamekeepers, particularly, hold the Hedgehog responsible for taking the eggs of game birds, and many are killed, though the impact of the Hedgehog on game birds`eggs is probably minimal compared to foxes or other animals.

Bonfires:
Bonfires provide a cosy place for a Hedgehog to sleep or even make it`s nest,so please check the material to be burnt before setting light to it.By moving it to another place it will help you to spot any hogs hiding there.
Compost heaps:
Compost heaps,in much the same way as bonfires, provide a place for a Hedgehog to shelter. Before turning it over please check very carefully for Hedgehogs.
Netting:
Many gardeners use netting to keep pests away from flowers or vegetables, and this can trap an unwary hog, soon become terribly entangled with it`s spines. In this situation,if it is not found very soon,it will die.Try to fix garden netting at least a foot above the ground so that Hedgehogs can walk underneath in safety.
Drains:
Drains can be death-traps for Hedgehogs,if they fall into one, there is little hope of them getting out again unaided.Try to keep drains covered to stop them falling in.
