STATUS: Not yet approved for use. Available through clinical trials and a special access scheme for adults
EXPERIMENTAL DOSAGE: Three capsules twice a day containing 133.3mg of lopinavir and 33.3mg of ritonavir.
CHILDREN: Liquid version available through special access scheme from September 2000
TIPS ON TAKING: Take with food.
COMMON SIDE-EFFECTS: Diarrhoea, loose stools affect 20-30% in first two months. Tiredness, stomach ache, vomiting and headache less common side-effects.
RESISTANCE TO LOPINAVIR: Resistance to more than one protease inhibitor may reduce the impact of lopinavir
KEY DRUG INTERACTIONS: Efavirenz reduces lopinavir blood levels. Lopinavir capsules contain ritonavir, so any drug which interacts with ritonavir should be avoided (see list in ritonavir entry).
