His aircraft was damaged and he bailed out parachuting down to earth where he was taken prisoner, 3rd January 1942 Helmut AUGSPACH, from Wismar on the Baltic Sea, was in a group of about 500 prisoners brought over from Pisa in Northern Italy during March 1945. Being a carpenter by profession he was found work producing furniture and fixtures Wilfred BABINEK, Leutnant, 3/NJG 2, Pilot of a Ju.88 bomber shot down by Anti Aircraft fire and died 29th December 1941, buried in Malta. He was born 27th November 1921 in Feuerbach. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia BACKES, Crewman of a He.111, died when his aircraft crashed during the night of 11th/12th June 1943. He was 28 years old Wilhelm BANSER, Unteroffizier, 1/NJG 3, Crewman of a Messerschmitt Bf.100 night fighter shot down and died 10th March 1941 Walter BARLAU, Feldwebel, III/JG 77, shot down 25th August 1943, and taken prisoner. Pilot of a Messerschmitt Bf.109. He was 21 years old, born 12th August 1922 Josef BAUER, born 15th August 1918 in Bodenkirchen. Died 19th April 1942 and buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Karl Max BAUER, Unteroffizier, II/KG 47, Wireless Operator of a Ju.88 bomber shot down into the sea. Rescued and taken prisoner 28th July 1942 Gerhard BECKER, Oberleutnant, 6/KG 77, Pilot of a Junkers Ju.88 bomber shot down by Anti Aircraft fire, and died early evening 9th March 1942. Buried in Malta. He was born 25th May 1916. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Heinrich BECKER, Unteroffizier, 9/StG 1, Pilot of Ju.87B Stuka failed to return to base after a raid on Valletta, died 4th May 1941 and buried in Malta. Born 31st July 1914 in Berleburg. He was rescued ten miles north of Grand Harbour and taken prisoner Wilhelm GRETZ, Leutnant, 7/LG 1, Junkers Ju.88 bomber Pilot shot down on 15th February 1941 Richard GROPP, born 28th August 1920 in Marburg. Died 14th June 1942 and buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Erich GRUN, from Hannover, German Parachute Battalion, was captured in the Tyrol towards the end of the war and sent to Malta. In March 1947 he decided to escape by taking a small boat and heading for Sicily. He was accompanied by four other German POW’s, and after landing in Syracuse they split up. He reached Germany 23 days after leaving Malta Winfried GUNTHER, Unteroffizier, 8/StG 3, Pilot of a Ju.87 Stuka shot down by Anti Aircraft fire, 1st April 1942. He baled out into the sea, was rescued by a RAF Launch and taken prisoner Albert GUENZEL, born 21st November 1905 in Semmelwitz, and died 13th June 1947, buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Wilhelm GUTT, Gefreiter, 3/NJG 2, Air Gunner of a Ju.88 bomber shot down by Anti Aircraft fire and died 29th December 1941, buried in Malta. He died 3rd May 1942 attempting a crash landing, and buried in Malta. He was born 16th July 1920 in Poecking. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Hermann HARNISH, Unteroffizier, Pilot of a Messerschmitt Bf.109 shot down on 29th June 1943, but he baled out and parachuted to land. He was injured and taken to 45 General Hospital in St. Patrick's, as a prisoner. He was born 9th September 1920 Arthur HANER, Unteroffizier, 7/LG 1, a Ju.88 bomber crew member crash landed into the sea after raiding Hal Far, on 18th January 1941 Helmut HARTLICH, Feldwebel, 9/LG 1, Wireless Operator of a Ju.88 bomber. His aircraft was badly damaged attacking Valletta, so he baled out and was taken prisoner, 29th April 1941. He was born 25th April 1915 in Dresden, and unmarried Gernot HARTMANN, Obergefreiter, Crewman of a Ju.88 bomber. Born 25th March 1919 in Halle, and died 6th February 1942, buried in Malta. He was 21 years old, and taken prisoner Manfred HINTZE, Gefreiter, 4/KG 76, Wireless Operator of a Ju.88 bomber, shot down 13th September 1943 and taken prisoner. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Otto KRAMPFERT, Feldwebel, Wireless Operator of a Ju.88 bomber, shot down 9th September 1943. Rescued by a RAF Launch and taken prisoner, 6th July 1942 Karl KUBITSKI, born 21st August 1912 in Wattenscheid, and died 6th July 1942, buried in Malta. He was born 1st March 1921 in Kalwitz. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Franz WALBURG, born 17th December 1919 in Lingenfeld, and died 19th January 1941, buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Fritz WEBER, Gefreiter, 9/StG 3, Wireless Operator of a Ju.87 Stuka. The pilot attempted a crash landing but the aircraft turned over and broke up. He survived the crash with minor injuries and was taken prisoner, 3rd May 1942 Edwin WEERS, born 3rd October 1909 in Ostrhauderfehn, and died 21st April 1943, buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Paul WENKUMS, born 7th April 1903 in Duisburg, and died 1st January 1947, buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Albert WESTPHALEN, Unteroffizier, III/StG 3, Air Gunner of a Ju.87 Stuka died 8th May 1942 when his aircraft crashed into the sea, buried in Malta. He was born 12th January 1923 in Kaltenkirchen. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Peter WILBERTZ, Oberfeldwebel, KGr 806, Crewman of a Ju.88 bomber shot down into the sea off Grand Harbour and died 6th July 1942 Paul WINKLER, born 31st December 1916 in Koenigsberg, and died 26th March 1942, buried in Malta. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Guenther WISSEL, Leutnant, Observer of a Ju.88 bomber, shot down 22nd August 1943, and wounded. Taken prisoner and to 45 General Hospital in St. Patrick's. He was 23 years old, born 11th August 1920 Hans-Georg WITT, Leutnant, 4/LG 1, Pilot of a Ju.88 bomber, shot down by Anti Aircraft fire and died 27th April 1942, buried in Malta. He was born 29th March 1919 in Berlin. In 1960 his remains were taken to the St. Michele Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia Werner WONDE, born 29th June 1920 in Guben, and died 23rd February 1942, buried in Malta.
