THE TURKISH CEMETERY AT MARSA
Turkish Cemetery Marsa – An old Maltese postcard
On a visit to Malta in 1867 the Turkish Sultan Abdul Aziz presented Emmanuel Luigi Galizia (1830 – 1906), the Chief Government Architect, with the Order of the Mejidie. He also financed the building of the Turkish cemetery at Marsa which was designed by Galizia and completed in 1874. For this commission he based his design on Persian-Indian architecture. Later in a similar style Galizia built for himself a summer residence ‘Alhambra’ in Rudolph Street, Sliema, which is situated opposite Holy Trinity Church.
The freighter s.s. Burdwan, 6000 gross tons, was part of the ‘Harpoon’ Convoy sailing to Malta from the west in June 1942. She received a near-miss but it left her rudder hard-over, and engine room flooded, so the tough decision was taken that she should be sunk.

Another Prisoner of War there was Dr. Nedjet Saadi, and the two men were political enemies, Dr. Saadi belonged to the Young Turk party, whilst Major Issa was a supporter of the Old faction, and evidence was produced that they frequently quarrelled. On the morning of 17th October 1916 Dr. Saadi was due to leave Malta for Egypt at around nine o'clock. Both men met about six a.m. as usual, when Major Issa pulled a knife and stabbed Dr. Saadi, and although medical help was rendered quickly by Major Lund of Royal Army Medical Corps, his life could not be saved.
