Women's Royal Naval Service in Malta

 

During the First World War, women were working in factories and the Army had established the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps so that more men were available as front line soldiers.

 

The Navy also needed more men on board its ships so it was decided to establish a Women's Royal Naval Service, known more generally as WRNS. On 29th November 1917 the Admiralty issued Memorandum No.245 announcing that recruitment had started and appealed for women to apply.

 

They needed women for a variety of jobs such as cooks, waitresses, laundresses, bookkeepers, telephonists, wireless operators, as well as drivers and motor mechanics.

 

The Headquarters of the Mediterranean Division was set up in Malta, in 1918

 

On 19th February 1919 the Admiralty issued an Order that WRNS would be demobbed and included the following tribute:

 

'The WRNS was brought into being at a time of great national emergency when it was necessary to release every man that could be spared for the active fighting forces.

 

The rapidity with which the Corps was organised to that end and brought to a high state of efficiency constitutes a remarkable achievement and one that reflects the greatest possible credit on the Director and her officers and ratings.

 

All who have come into contact with the WRNS have been impressed by their discipline, zeal and esprit de corps and the Royal Navy has felt justly proud of the Women's Service which the greatest war of all time called into being to work with us for the common end.'

 

The 24th May 1919 issue of the Daily Malta Chronicle announced that in the World War I Honours List the British Empire Medal had been awarded to Dorothy Evelyn French, a Senior Writer employed in the office of the British Naval Commander-in-Chief at the Auberge de Baviere in Valletta.

 

Demobilization continued throughout the summer of 1919 and the WRNS officially ceased to exist on 1st October 1919. The total number of girls having been in the service at its peak was 5,054 ratings and 438 officers.

 

In April 1939 the Women's Royal Naval Service was reformed. New trade skills were added, Gunnery Maintenance and repair, Photo Reconnaissance Interpretation, Cypherines, Operation Room Plotters and for modern communications.

 

 

In January 1944 the first draft of Wrens, comprising forty ratings and one officer arrived at Malta on board HMS Orion and were quartered at the Imperial Hotel, in Sliema.

 

After the Second World War instead of closing down the WRNS it was decided to make them a permanent organisation, and an announcement to this effect was made on 1st February 1949.

 

Service on Malta gave many girls the chance to enjoy a much wider social life than that back in their hometown. With several thousand British servicemen on the island the presence of around three hundred single girls meant that they received invitations to all sorts of entertainment, either in groups or on a one-to-one basis.

 

At the Manoel Island Theatre on Friday evening, 24th February 1950 there was the 'All Wren Variety Show', comprising a mixed selection of items. The most popular being a comic opera 'The Maiden's Dilemma', the lively 'Cockney Capers', the picturesque 'Rhapsody in Blue' and 'On Brighton Sands' featuring Victorian bathing belles. The band of HMS Forth provided the musical accompaniment.

 

 

In 1953 the Wrens at Kalafrana prepared a Coronation Supper in the courtyard of their quarters prior to their departure by bus to the Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta for the HMS Falcon Coronation Dance. Over 200 guests attended including Captain R.M. Smeeton, the Commanding Officer of HMS Falcon and Chief Officer G.S. Brown, Senior WRNS Officer Mediterranean.

 

Also in June 1953 Minesweepers of the American Sixth Fleet were moored in Pieta Creek, across the water from Whitehall Mansions, and groups of Wrens were invited on board to enjoy dinner and a film show.

 

The Phoenicia Hotel was the venue for the Wrens of HMS St. Angelo to hold their St, Valentine's Dance in February 1954, which was attended by Commandant Dame Mary Lloyd, Director, W.R.N.S., and over 400 other guests.

 

It is therefore not surprising that many Wrens married during their time on Malta, this list contains over three hundred, and almost without exception to a Sailor, Soldier, Airman or Marine.

 

In 1955 the only overseas base where Wrens were employed was Malta, but over the next few years other opportunities arose as new bases were added.

Due to the local political situation in January 1972 Wrens working at the HQ Allied Forces Mediterranean in Malta, were moved over to Naples, where the HQ remained, but some returned and in January 1973 there were four Officers and forty-six Wrens, all quartered at Fort St. Angelo, known as HMS St. Angelo. The previous location of Whitehall Mansions was now a closed building.

 

The largest groups were Radio Operators or Writers, who crossed Grand Harbour daily to work at the Lascaris HQ in Valletta. The full title was 'The Commander in Chief Mediterranean Fleet's Communication Centre in Lascaris Buildings' shortened to Lascaris. Apart from the buildings above ground tunnels into the rock lead to an underground complex with an operations room, telecommunications rooms, etc. Nowadays this is open to the public as a tourist attraction and called the Lascaris War Rooms.

A number of Wrens were Dental Assistants and they also had to cross Grand Harbour on a regular basis to help at the Families Dental Clinic in Floriana. aHarH   The British Forces finally left Malta on 31st March 1979

 

With the advancement of female equality it was decided in 1990 that Wrens should serve on ships at sea. Initial resistance to the idea was overcome, and the decision was implemented, but not without some amusement as expressed by the cartoonist of the Daily Mail newspaper.

 

 

On 6th February 1990 WRNS Second Officer Chella Franklin, aged 27 years, joined HMS Norfolk as Weapons Engineering Officer. Total integration with the Royal Navy was then achieved and the Women's Royal Naval Service was dissolved in 1994.

 

In 2002 Whitehall Mansions, which for many years housed the Wrens, hence the name 'The Wrennery', was completely renovated. The exterior stonework was cleaned and the interior was converted into prestigious offices. It now contains the Embassies of Austria, Ireland, The Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal, as well as the British High Commission.
