G. ABELA, died 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. He was a Canteen Server on the Armed Cruiser HMS Black Prince. His ship had sustained some damage from a heavy shell during the day, but became separated from other British ships and around midnight came across German battleship Thuringen about 1,000 yards away. The German ship turned her powerful spotlights onto the Black Prince and opened fire with her 12inch guns. Less than a minute after the shells struck there were two massive explosions as the magazines blew up. Every one of the 857 men on board lost their lives

Anthony ATTARD, E/LX25382, Assistant Steward, died September 17th 1940. The heavy cruiser HMS Kent sailed from Alexandria on 13th September along with other Royal Navy ships on a mission to bombard Italian troops in the coastal towns of North Africa on 18th September. However just before midnight on the 17th September the ship was attacked by an Italian torpedo aircraft, which torpedoed her and caused considerable damage. A total of 36 men were killed including the Captain. Also amongst the casualties was his father Joseph ATTARD. HMS Kent was towed back to Alexandria, for emergency repairs then later returned to England to be fully repaired.

Joseph ATTARD, E/LX22396, Leading Steward, died September 17th 1940. The heavy cruiser HMS Kent sailed from Alexandria on 13th September along with other Royal Navy ships on a mission to bombard Italian troops in the coastal towns of North Africa on 18th September. However just before midnight on the 17th September the ship was attacked by an Italian torpedo aircraft, which torpedoed her and caused considerable damage. A total of 36 men were killed including the Captain. Also amongst the casualties was his son Anthony ATTARD. HMS Kent was towed back to Alexandria, for emergency repairs then later returned to England to be fully repaired.

Paolo ATTARD, died 31st May 1916. He was an Officer’s Steward serving on the Destroyer HMS Shark. Whilst his ship was counter attacking German torpedo boats which retired from the scene they came under heavy gunfire from three German battleships. Shells shattered the wheelhouse, and disabled the engines, leaving the ship an easy target. Though severely injured Commander Loftus Jones did his utmost under impossible odds, and he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross
