G. CONSIGLIO, died 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. He was a Bandsman on board the Armoured Cruiser HMS Defence, which was the flagship of Rear Admiral Sir Robert Arbuthnot. His ship came under intense gunfire from six German dreadnoughts, and was set ablaze, a further salvo hit the ship which then exploded sending smoke and flames hundreds of feet high. All the 903 men on board lost their lives

 

William CONSIGLIO, Steward, E/LX22308, died 9th June 1940, on board the Aircraft Carrier HMS Glorious, when his ship was sunk off the Norwegian Coast by the German Battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst

John CONTI BORDA, was born in Kalkara on 5th June 1916. He joined the Royal Navy in October 1935, as an Assistant Steward, at HMS St. Angelo, and made it his career.  He went to sea and served on many ships throughout his time in the navy, but also was posted to shore establishments in Egypt, and depot ships at Malta. He climbed the promotion ladder and held the rank of Chief Petty Officer when he retired in September 1960

G. CUOMO, died 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. He was a Bandsman on the Armed Cruiser HMS Black Prince. His ship had sustained some damage from a heavy shell during the day, but became separated from other British ships and around midnight came across German battleship Thuringen about 1,000 yards away. The German ship turned her powerful spotlights onto the Black Prince and opened fire with her 12inch guns. Less than a minute after the shells struck there were two massive explosions as the magazines blew up. Every one of the 857 men on board lost their lives

Joseph DARMANIN, 353145, born in Burmola 3rd October 1875. Joined the Royal Navy in March 1894 as a Domestic on board HMS Camperdown. He became an Officer’s Steward and made the Navy his career. He served on several ships and was killed in action on 31st May 1916, at the Battle of Jutland. He was on board the Battle Cruiser HMS Indefatigable. Three armour-piercing shells fired by the German Ship Von der Tann, penetrated the Indefatigable’s deck and exploded inside the ship blowing up a magazine. As the stricken ship started to sink by the stern more shells hit near the bow. This time within thirty seconds there was a violent explosion as another magazine blew up and the doomed ship heeled over and disappeared beneath the sea. It happened so fast that there were only two survivors, and 1,019 men lost their lives
