Joseph TATTON, 308181, alias James LOUGHLIN, born in Valletta 17th July 1877, a dairyman. His record says he gave himself up as deserter James Loughlin, 298686, on 12th December 1902 and was sentenced to 42 days Hard Labour. The fraud was discovered when the original James Loughlin gave himself up on 27th February 1905. Loughlin was born in Edinburgh on 18th January 1881, and was not retained for further service in the Navy but in view of Tatton's satisfactory conduct he continued in the Navy. He had joined as a Stoker on HMS Pembroke II on 12th December 1902, and after completing his detention made the Navy his career, serving on several ships. He was promoted to Leading Stoker on 21st November 1912 and Petty Officer Stoker on 20th November 1913. He was demobbed from the service in February 1919

His ship encountered the German invasion force for Norway and rammed the German cruiser Admiral Hipper, but was sunk by gunfire from the German ship. Only 38 of the crew survived. He was killed in action on 31st May 1916 on board HMS Defence at the Battle of Jutland. His ship was an Armoured Cruiser and the flagship of Rear Admiral Sir Robert Arbuthnot. They came under intense gunfire from six German dreadnoughts, and HMS Defence was set ablaze, a further salvo hit the ship which then exploded sending smoke and flames hundreds of feet high. All the 903 men on board lost their lives
