Lewis VASSALLO, died 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. He was a Carpenter’s Mate on the Armed Cruiser HMS Black Prince. His ship had sustained some damage from a heavy shell during the day, but became separated from other British ships and around midnight came across German battleship Thuringen about 1,000 yards away. The German ship turned her powerful spotlights onto the Black Prince and opened fire with her 12inch guns. Less than a minute after the shells struck there were two massive explosions as the magazines blew up. Every one of the 857 men on board lost their lives

W.L. VASSALLO, Canteen Manager, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

George VELLA, died 31st May 1916, at the Battle of Jutland. He was serving as Canteen Assistant on the Battle Cruiser HMS Indefatigable. Three armour-piercing shells fired by the German Ship Von der Tann, penetrated the Indefatigable’s deck and exploded inside the ship blowing up a magazine. As the stricken ship started to sink by the stern more shells hit near the bow. This time within thirty seconds there was a violent explosion as another magazine blew up and the doomed ship heeled over and disappeared beneath the sea. It happened so fast that there were only two survivors, and 1,019 men lost their lives

His ship had sustained some damage from a heavy shell during the day, but became separated from other British ships and around midnight came across German battleship Thuringen about 1,000 yards away. The German ship turned her powerful spotlights onto the Black Prince and opened fire with her 12inch guns. Less than a minute after the shells struck there were two massive explosions as the magazines blew up. Every one of the 857 men on board lost their lives

He was one of the two crewmen who died, the other 58 were rescued by the Greek Navy and taken back to Alexandria. The Brambleleaf did not sink, and was later towed back to Alexandria and used as an oil hulk

He was on the Battle Cruiser HMS Indefatigable at the Battle of Jutland. Three armour-piercing shells fired by the German Ship Von der Tann, penetrated the Indefatigable’s deck and exploded inside the ship blowing up a magazine. As the stricken ship started to sink by the stern more shells hit near the bow. This time within thirty seconds there was a violent explosion as another magazine blew up and the doomed ship heeled over and disappeared beneath the sea. It happened so fast that there were only two survivors, and 1,019 men lost their lives on 31st May 1916

George XERRI, was born in Zabbar on 6th May 1890, and joined the Royal Navy on 11th August 1914 as a Fireman, with the service No. 406017. He served for a time on HMS Defence, and was a member of the crew on a voyage from Malta to Chatham Dockyard, where he disembarked. The ship sailed with a new crew to take part in the Battle of Jutland where she was sunk and everybody on board lost their lives. He later served on HMS Whitehead and HMS Bacchus. He married Ludgarda Candela, and had a family. He died in 1959
