BAILEY ,  Charles, H.M.S Conqueror. Died 8th September 1859, Aged 21 years. While bathing with two shipmates in Sliema Creek, he was seized with illness and sank. When rescued a few minutes later he was already dead. Buried Ta' Braxia Cemetery.

BURKE, Claude C., PO/16006, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Grafton. Died 26th September 1918. Age 21 years. The son of Charles and Ellen Burke, 47 Athlone Road, Upper Tulse Hill, London. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

BURTENSHAW, D.E., Marine, PO/X6136, 40 Commando RM, age 24 years. Died in air crash at Luqa airport. Died 18th May 1953.  The accident took place on 17th May 1953 when a Valetta aircraft VW810 of 70 Squadron using call sign MORKK force landed on the grass next to the runway when its aileron jammed, hit the runway control caravan and burst into flames. Buried Imtarfa Military Cemetery.

 

BURTON, Reginald Edward George, Captain, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Irresistible. Age 32 years. His death was the result of wounds received on 18th March 1915 during the sinking of HMS Irresistible in the Dardanelles. He was brought to the Royal Naval Hospital, Malta. Died 1st April 1915. The son of Thomas Henry and Eliza Burton, 35 Manille Road, Balham, London. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

BUTTERWORTH, Albert E., CH/18668, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Russell. Died 27th April 1916. Refused entry into the harbour due to her late night arrival on 25th April 1916, HMS Russell was forced to circle off shore. She had come from the Dardanelles. On the following morning when she was preparing to enter Grand Harbour through what was thought to be a mine-swept channel, she hit two mines which had recently been laid by the German submarine U-73.  The ship remained afloat for about twenty minutes before capsizing. Of the 720 crew, 124 lost their lives including most of the officers. Eighteen bodies were recovered and brought ashore for Naval burial. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

CAMBRY, Richard. Marine. HMS Vigilant. Missing from his ship since 5th May his body was recovered from Dockyard Creek on the 11th. An inquest decided accidental death since money was found in his pockets and there were no signs of external injuries. Died 5th May 1859. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

CANT, Christopher, Lance Corporal, Royal Marines Light Infantry, HMS Hood. Died 13th October 1902. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

CARROL, Charles Frederick. Gunner. Royal Marine Artillery. Age 20 years. HMS Theseus. Died Saturday 3rd March 1901. He was found dead in a bedroom at the Union Jack Hotel, 14 Strada Calcedonia, Floriana, from a revolver shot. An inquest returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

CHESSHER, Thomas Henry, Colour-Sergeant, Royal Marine Artillery. HMS Exmouth. Age 34 years. After he read a letter informing him that his wife had died he took his own life by shooting himself with a small revolver. Died Saturday 5th December 1908. He left behind two children. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

COOPER, Thomas Pickney, Deal/3585 (S), Private, Royal Marines Medical Unit, RND, Third son of Joseph C. and Alice Cooper. Born 18th September 1881. Enlisted in END 3rd Field Ambulance. Left UK for Dardanelles 27th June 1915. Died of dysentery on board HM Hospital ship Devantia. Died 5th August 1915. The third son of Joseph C. and Alice Cooper. His name is in the Book of Remembrance at St. Hilda’s Church, West Cliff, Whitby. Buried Pieta Military Cemetery.

 

CRAFTER, F.D., RMB 2136, Musician. HMS Caesar. Died 13th October 1918. Age 20 years. The son of James William and Mary Ann Crafter, 25 Waldo Road, Bromley, Kent. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

CRAVEN, James, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Egmont. Age 24 years. Died 13th April 1909. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

D’LOYDE, H. John, Marine, Castille Signal Station. Died 22nd February 1926. Age 28 years. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

DAVIS, Henry, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Egmont. Age 28 years. Died 9th July 1905. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

DAVIS, George Edward, Marine. HMS Queen Elizabeth. Died 9th November 1927. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

DAY, Harry Melville Arbuthnot, GC, DSO, OBE. Born in Sarawak 3rd August 1898, he joined the Royal Marines Light Infantry in September 1916. He was serving on HMS Britannia when it was torpedoed by a German submarine on 9th November 1918. The ship was in darkness, on fire, and listing when he went below decks and rescued two injured men. For his bravery he was awarded the Albert Medal which was changed to a George Cross in 1971. He trained as a pilot and transferred to the Royal Air Force in 1930, allowing him to lead the synchronized acrobatic team at the first Hendon Air Display in 1931. At the outbreak of World War II he held the rank of Wing-Commander and was shot down during a daylight raid over Germany. He was held in several Prisoner-of-War camps but escaped by tunneling a total of six times, always being recaptured. Later he was sent to Sachsenhausen, Flossenberg and Dachau Concentration Camps. In 1945 with the end of the war in sight he was taken to the Austrian Tyrol with other VIP prisoners from all parts of Germany, from where he made a successful escape and met the American Forces at Bolzano. He died in Malta 2nd December 1977, aged 79 years. Buried in Ta Braxia Cemetery.

 

DON, Ronald, Lance Corporal, RM9835, 40 Commando RM, age 23 years. From Stirling, Scotland. Killed in an air crash at Luqa airport. Died 25th May 1953. Buried Imtarfa Military Cemetery.

 

EASTERBROOK, W., Private. HMS Orlando. The ship was anchored in Tunis Bay on Thursday 3rd November 1864, when a party of officers and men went onshore for a picnic. During the afternoon they were returning to the ship in the cutter under sail when they were hit by a sudden squall which overturned the boat throwing all the occupants into the sea. They were  about 1000 yards from the shore. Twelve men including two Royal Marines, Private Easterbrook and Captain Pritchard, were drowned. A large memorial was erected on the right hand side of the entrance to the Upper Barracca Gardens in Valletta.

 

EASTWOOD, Charles, HMS Ocean. Died 20th July 1929. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

EVANS, William Henry, CH/18385, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Cornwallis. He died when the ship was torpedoed off Malta during the early hours of 9th January 1917 by the German submarine U-32 close to the spot where HMS Russell was sunk in 1916.

 

EVANS, Charles, PO/X 100591, Marine, No.3 R.M. Commando, aged 27 years. Died 16th November 1947. He had served during World War II and in Malaya. For reasons unknown he committed suicide by hanging himself in a blitzed building in Floriana. Buried in Pembroke Military Cemetery.

 

FITZSIMMONS, William Charles, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Cardiff. Died 5th August 1925. Age 19 years. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

FLEET, Eric Leonard, PO/X106240, Sergeant, H.M.L.C.F. Age 35 years. Died 25th September 1943. The son of Joseph Leonard and Gladys May Fleet and husband of Olive Irene Slade Fleet, Watford, Hertfordshire. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

FRIEND, Frederick, CH/X14014, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Abercrombie. Died 20th March 1919. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

GARDNER, Hubert Reginald, RMB/X59, Musician. HMS Neptune. Age 29 years. Died 25th February 1942. The son of William Henry and Harriett Gardner, Milton, Southsea, Hampshire. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

GARWOOD, William, Sergeant, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Bacchante. Age 32 years. On 10th April 1910 Gunner Arthur A Bagley RMA drew a revolver with the intention of shooting someone and during the scuffle which followed Sergeant Garwood was wounded, and died the next day in Bighi Naval Hospital. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

HAYES, George, Lieutenant. Died 18th August 1850, after a short illness at Floriana. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

HEADLEY, Thomas George, Private. Royal Marines Light Infantry. PLY/X16353, Plymouth Battalion, RND. Died 6th June1915 in Imtarfa Hospital from his wounds. Buried Imtarfa Military Cemetery.

 

HEALEY, John. Private. HMS Hibernia, age 21 years. Fell onto the Mole under Senglea Bastion at Corradino Creek. An inquest was held by Magistrate Harper which showed that he had left his ship the previous evening in the company of another Marine and after drinking in several bars in Valletta returned to Senglea about 2.a.m. and both laid down to sleep. When the other Marine awoke, Healy was not there but his body was discovered lying in a pool of blood below the Bastion with his skull fractured. He had fallen from a height of about 50 feet. Died 22nd April 1857. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

HEATH, Walter W., Gunner, Royal Marine Artillery. HMS Venerable. Age 42 years. Died 4th June 1905. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

HICKS, Alfred O.P., PO/X10110, Sergeant, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Egmont. He had received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medals. Religion: Wesleyan. Age 35 years. Died 31st July 1915 in the Military Hospital, Floriana. The son of Thomas and Anne Hicks of South Farnborough, Hampshire, and husband of Mabel Hicks. Buried Pieta Military Cemetery.

 

HILL, Thomas E.J. HMS Delhi. Age 27 years. Died 19th June 1935. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

HINCHLEY Derek, RM17459. 40 Commando. Died 1st January 1961 in a car accident at Gzira. Aged 20 years. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

LINDSELL, Ernest Frederick. Captain. He was born in London 21st May 1870 and joined the Marines in the ranks, being appointed a temporary Lieutenant and serving in the Dardanelles until 2nd November 1915. He retired on 7th July 1919. Died 20th January 1933, age 62 years. Buried Ta Braxia Cemetery.

 

LITTLEWOOD, Charles, QuarterMaster Sergeant, Instructor of Musketry. Died 9th April 1905, at the residence of Corporal and Mrs. Gordon, at St.Pauls Bay. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

McSWEENEY, Thomas. HMS Rodney. Died 8th June 1837. His execution took place in Grand Harbour on board HMS Rodney. He had been found Guilty of killing Sergeant T. Allan whilst the ship was at Barcelona Roads, Spain. Buried St. Lawrence Cemetery, Vittoriosa.

MEFFEN, Harry E., Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Duncan. Employed as an officer’s batman on board HMS Duncan, on Friday night 2nd July 1909 he shot himself, leaving a private letter. Died 2nd July 1909. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

MILLER, John. Sergeant. HMS Expedition. Died 4th August 1802 from fever. Buried Quarantine Bastion Cemetery, Floriana.

 

MILLER, William. Major. Royal Marine Artillery. Born in Plymouth, Devon, he joined the RMA on 1st January 1864. He retired with the rank of Major on 21st July 1879 and took up residence in Malta, where he became the Secretary and Manager for the Malta Union Club in Valletta. Died 14th October 1883, age 37 years. Buried Ta Braxia Cemetery.

 

MILLS, Herbert George, CH/14270, Private Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Europa. His wife lived at 65 Column Street, Chatham, Kent. Died in Bighi Naval Hospital 29th November 1918. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

MOGG, Reuben. Marine. HMS Hercules, the Flagship in the Harbour. Died 30th December 1869. His body was found in the ditch beneath Valletta Bastion during Malta festivities. Thought to have fallen whilst intoxicated. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

MOORE, L., Gunner, Royal Marine Artillery,  HMS Vengeance. Died 5th April 1903. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

MULLARD, Edward Joseph, Marine, PO/X1286, aged 24 years. Killed while serving at Fort St.Angelo. Died 30th April 1941. The son of Robert and Agnes Emily Mullard of Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire. Buried Imtarfa Military Cemetery.

 

MUSSELWHITE, Arthur, PLY/6793, Colour-Sergeant, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Exmouth. Died 9th October 1915. Age 40 years. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

NASON, George William Patrick, Sergeant. HMS Egmont. Age 35 years. He was attempting to rescue Marine Yalden who was in difficulties swimming off Ricasoli Rifle Ranges, but the sea was too rough and he drowned. Died 26th December 1932. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

OFFORD, Herbert, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Edgar. Age 35 years. He died from consumption whilst on passage from Port Said to Malta. He had served in the Corps for 17 years. Died 7th May 1910. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

ORR, James H., Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Irresistible. Died 1st December 1907, in Bighi Royal Naval Hospital from typhoid fever. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

POPE, Archibald F.C. HMS Courageous. Accidentally killed performing his duties, and died 20th January 1930. Age 22 years. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

PORTER, John. Marine. HMS Queen. Died 27th December 1843. During anchor drill a block struck him on the head killing him instantly. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

PORTER, Arthur Thomas, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Aboukir. Age 25 years. Died 7th June 1910. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

PRIESTNALL, Gilbert S., PO/22683, Sergeant. HMS St.Angelo. Died 20th April 1941. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

PRITCHARD, E.F., Captain. HMS Orlando. The ship was anchored in Tunis Bay on Thursday 3rd November 1864, when a party of officers and men went onshore for a picnic. During the afternoon they were returning to the ship in the cutter under sail when they were hit by a sudden squall which overturned the boat throwing all the occupants into the sea. They were  about 1000 yards from the shore. Twelve men including two Royal Marines, Private Easterbrook and Captain Pritchard, were drowned. A large memorial was erected on the right hand side of the entrance to the Upper Barracca Gardens in Valletta.

 

PROSSER, John. Marine. Died 24th February 1853. He was ashore the night of 15th February and got involved in a fight with Robert Dewhurst, a sailor from HMS Britannia.  When taken to the Police Station he had a wound over one eye, but returned to his ship. His condition deteriorated, and on the 19th he was taken to Bighi Naval Hospital where he died. A post mortem revealed a fracture, and a large quantity of congealed blood on the brain. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

SARRACK, William, Marine. HMS Medea. Died 17th April 1859, age 37 years. His body was found alongside the Mole in Santa Teresa, but the inquest returned a verdict of accidental death since money was found in his pockets as well as a bottle of rum. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

SAXTON, Charles Edward, PLY/7942, Plymouth Battn, RMB. Died of his wounds 30th December 1915. Age 36 years. The son of George and Edith Saxton, Rudgeway, Bristol. Awarded LS and GCM. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

THOMAS, Gwynne David. RM14227. Born in Wales in 1936 he served in the Merchant Navy before joining the Marines in 1954. On leaving the service he became the owner of ‘The Welshman’ pub in Sliema. He died 23rd December 1997, and left a widow Judeth, son Neville and daughter Lita. Buried Addolorata Cemetery.

TIMMS, Leslie John. RM7269. Joined the Corps in 1948 with 513 Squad. Served 16 years which included three tours to Malta with 45 Commando RM. He died 28th December 1997 in Sliema. He left a widow Jean, sons Mark Anthony and John Paul, and daughters Diane, Susan, Catherine and Lorraine.  Buried Addolorata Cemetery.

TOWNSEND, William J., CH/18886, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Egmont. Died 22nd June 1918. Age 22 years. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

TREDENNICK, G.J., Lieutenant, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Minerva. Died 1st September 1906, from fever. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

TURNER, Alex Talbot, Lieutenant. HMS Ramillies. On 2nd March 1939 at 06.40 hours HMS Ramillies was off Gozo making preparations to enter Grand Harbour, when one of the davits broke loose whilst making the ladders ready to hoist out, and carried Sergeant Young overboard. Lieutenant Turner immediately dived into the rough sea in an attempted rescue and was last seen about 40 yards away from the ship swimming towards Sergeant Young.  However both men disappeared beneath the waves and their bodies were never found. A Burial Service conducted by the Reverend J. Stubbs, the Chaplain, was held on board HMS Ramillies on 9th March.

Lieutenant Turner was posthumously awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery. The medal was presented to his father Alexander Forrest Turner, of Chesholt, Fernhurst, Haslemere Surrey, and later to the Royal Marines Museum.

 

UNSTEAD, Albert, Private, Royal Marines Light Infantry. HMS Hibernia. Died 23rd August 1903. On being relieved from duty at the Naval Magazine near the old Canteen he accidentally fell into the sea and was drowned. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

WELDRAKE, William, Private, HMS Formidable. Died 31st January 1843, whilst employed in prising open a heavy beam, his crow-bar jerked upwards and struck him on the forehead. He lingered for about an hour before he died. Buried Bighi Hospital Cemetery.

 

WELSH, Harry, Private, CH/7687, Royal Marines Light Infantry. Died 19th August 1916 in Bighi Royal Naval Hospital. Buried in the Roman Catholic area of Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

WEST, John Thomas Ekin, 13942, Gunner, Royal Marine Artillery. HMS Benbow. Died 24th September 1920. Age 27 years. The son of William and Mary Adelaide West, Town Street, Upwell, Cambridgeshire. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

WHITE, Arthur, Band Corporal. HMS Indefatigable. Died 5th February 1914. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

WHITE, Colin E., RMB/X3164. HMS Eagle. Age 20 years. Died 2nd September 1958 from injuries received in a car accident at Rabat. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.

 

WICKENDEN, Charles Percival, Acting Corporal. HMS Devonshire. Age 29 years. Died 4th September 1929. Buried in Kalkara Naval Cemetery.
